Listen Up! Iman Europe x CONTRABAND "Hello, Mello" EP

sunset with palm trees swaying

Well, the summer is coming to an end soon, but in Los Angeles, CA the weather is always pretty wonderful. Day cruising and late night rendevousing as Iman Europe suggests as the setting of what her "Hello, Mellow" EP sounds like, is spot on. Iman Europe, born in New York, raised in Los Angeles and currently resides in the "Big Apple", connected with the New York based production team CONTRABAND to collaborate on this project. Her smooth, soulful vocals lace the vibey, trapish beats so well. Most definitely living up to the coined musical genre "Trap Soul".

Of course there is nothing new under the sun, but Iman Europe being a creative writer pulls you into her story of love, life and relations with Mr. Right or possibly that Mr. Right Now. The typical gamble we all take when seeing someone. I definitely enjoyed "Hello, Mellow" for its content and chill vibe, but I also loved how a couple tracks Iman showed us she has nice rap delivery, flow as well. At times throughout this album I recognized a familiar feeling of my all-time favorite, Lauryn Hill. So, that's dope. I'm looking forward to hearing more from both Iman Europe and CONTRABAND because this EP was so magical. I know she has much more to offer having spent ample amount of time on both the west and east coasts. A cool perspective will be found, and her musical influences will be heard in the music for sure. Iman has so many other dope songs on her soundcloud page, but I will post a few of my other favorite tracks by her below. Make sure to link up with Iman Europe and CONTRABAND to keep up with all their happenings and of course the music.

This was my introduction song to Iman Europe...

This one I keep on repeat...

Just because....

Anderson Paak & The Free Nationals & Friends at The Lyric Theatre

Tuesdays in July just got a little hotter this summer with Anderson Paak & The Free Nationals' residency at The Lyric Theatre on La Brea just south of Melrose here in Los Angeles. Last night, I finally made it to a show and let me just say I will be back next week. Thus far the artist line ups have been jam-packed with raw talent showcasing the diverse genres of the LA music scene. These type of shows are the reason why I moved to LA. Established artists like Shafiq Husayn of SA-RA Creative Partners and Brook D'Leau, who creates with San Pedro's own superstar Miguel, and is one-half of the ever so funky, soulful, trail-blazing, electronic artist, dynamic-duo J*Davey. As well as up and coming artists like Doja Cat and MNDSGN to those who have been making waves in the music scene such as Like of Pac Div and Anderson Paak & The Free Nationals ruled the stage. Live shows can make or break your love for an artist, and it's truly a skill to capture and keep the attention of the audience. I was completely captivated last night by all the performances. They were all so different yet complemented eachother so well. The Lyric Theatre is an intimate venue that allowed you to feel and connect with the artist, which is also worth noting.

Upon arrival the vibe was nice. DJ Skitz set the tone with his selections accompanied with the corresponding music video projected above the stage. The host for the evening, Verbs, kept the show lively and moving in the right direction by interacting with and getting the audience involved. MNDSGN set things off with his on-the-fly, electronic sound experience on his Roland SP-555. He will release his debut album on Stones Throw Records this fall. Like of Pac Div came out and dropped some junglist-trap-slap-banger remixes on us to activate the TURN UP in us all. Brook D'Leau shared some of the gems his been crafting up, and to our surprise Jack Davey came out and sang their new song! It was such a treat. Being a big J*Davey fan and to have this all unexpectedly unfold right between our ears! Man! So pumped! haaaa

At this point I'm thinking okay the show climaxed it can't get much better than this. Then, Anderson Paak & The Free Nationals happened. Let's just say I wasn't ready. I've come across the name Breezy Lovejoy aka Anderson Paak, but I wasn't familiar with his music. It was a great first impression to see and hear him do it live. He's got "IT". The energy, the bad boyism, the talent. I mean how many vocalists have you seen give there all in a vocal performance then jump on the drums and continue with the same intensity and passion. It was pretty dope. I'm a new fan. The Free Nationals were also rockin' it out on the 4-string bass, electric guitar, keys and DJ Skitz even added accents of some turntable action to complete the musical experience. The arrangement of their set was in sync. I don't know how often they rehearse, but it seems like they have their performance "dressed to the nines". It was sharp. I've attended many shows, and stage presence and performance is everything. They played with my emotions. Just when you thought the set was over, and Anderson Paak is wiping away all the sweat from his face, say a few smooth things to the audience. Then, BAM, all of a sudden we were right inside of the next song. Dope, beyond dope.

Next up was Doja Cat, and this is where the story ends for me. It was like being awaken from a wonderful, wonderful dream. I had to leave the show unexpectedly, and I feel totally incomplete. I'm just sayin' haaa From what I did see and hear. I totally dig what she's bringing. I'm familiar with her music and you can find a few of her cuts on a couple Really Not Radio shows. She's still a mystery to me, which keeps the music exciting. Hopefully, I catch her performance tomorrow during the Soulection TSOT show or in the very near future.

Last night was sooooo good. I'm mos def anticipating the big reveal of next week's lineup. It's the last show, so I'm sure it will be a killer finale. Ooooh who's it going to be??? Anywho, I suggest you be there. Only if you want that real good, feel good music. Check out some of the above artists' music below and make sure you connect with them on your favorite social network to keep up with all the sweet, sweet music.

What's News: Tupac on Broadway: HOLLER If Ya Hear Me!

Black background white writing of Tupac lyrics with Red Rose in foreground

Ladies and gentleman it's a proud day for Hip Hop and for Tupac Shakur, his family, friends and all who believed in his revolutionary message. "Holler If Ya Hear Me" is a Hip Hop musical on Broadway showing at the Palace Theater in New York City until January 2015. Tupac Shakur's poetic, genuine lyrics are brought to life through an auto-biographical story of friendship, love, family, change and hope scripted by Todd Kreidler. Directed by acclaimed Broadway and film director, Kenny Leon who was recently nominated for the musical "A Raisin in the Sun" that returned to Broadway in 2014. There are a several producers involved with this project, but I must mention that Tupac's mother, Afeni Shakur, has approved "Holler If Ya Hear Me". Ms. Shakur is an advocate for today's youth by bringing a message of hope to those battling against the odds. She extends Tupac's legacy through the establishment of the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation and Center For the Arts. Author, performer, lecturer, recording artist Saul Williams has a key role in bringing life to Tupac's lyrics as well as many other Broadway established or debut cast members.

I remember growing up hearing that Hip Hop was a fad, but it's 2014, and it's still here. It's on Broadway. Do you overstand how big this is? Tupac Shakur is one of the best selling artists with over 77 million albums sold worldwide. His words were poetic and prophetic that transcended the streets and communities he wanted to change. He was a socially conscious messenger who understood how powerful and life-changing Hip Hop could be. Tupac was misunderstood like most brilliant mind's are as referenced throughout history. If he was still with us today the state of pop rap culture would be much more substantial and useful for today's youth. Ya heard, better yet, holla if  you hear meh.

I hope this musical makes it around the theater circuit, especially, here in Los Angeles. I guess this would give me an excuse to take a trip to the Big Apple. I hope you get to experience "Holler If Ya Hear Me" on Broadway to grasp the depth of Tupac's mind. If you can't, here's an in depth exploration of the themes and content of this musical in study guide form.

What's News: Poppington - Naturel's "To Die For" Collection of Art Takes Pop to the Max!

Notorious BIG in Coogi sweater
"Picasso Biggie"

Damon Dash's Poppington art establishment, located in the lower east side of Manhattan, was poppin' this past week featuring illy artist Lawrence Atoigue, who goes by the moniker, Naturel. Naturel's pop culture, cubism illustrations took center stage of his first solo exhibition called "To Die For". His vivid collection of work references urban, popular, legendary icons like Notorious B.I.G, Kanye West, Tupac and Basquiat. He intertwines the fashion world, especially, high fashion signature designs in some of his pieces. Also, showing love to the sneaker head lifestyle to flashy, gold chains draped over delicate roses or a faceless 'nekkid' woman with a choice drink, clean kicks or something to puff isn't far from his mind. Naturel's work reflects the wants and desires of many of our daily lives.

Naturel has been putting in work collaborating with some of the best from various industries like your jeweler's favorite jeweler, Mr. Flawless or music producer !llmind. He has also been the creative director for apparel lines such as Levi's. His latest impressive venture was with the car company, Fiat. He flew out during Coachella weekend to apply his signature style to their new Fiat 500L. Pretty cool. Naturel's "To Die For" collection of works curated by David Chang and Greg Cummins will be available for viewing from July 10 - August 1, 2014. Make sure to connect with Naturel on your favorite social network and check out his prints for purchase here. Naturel's Instagram

Listen Up! Dimond Saints

Diamonds shining while floating in the blue sky

Are you ready for a sound experience that transcends your own expectation of music? Well, you clicked on the right album. Dimond Saints, An-Ten-Nae and Releece (producers/DJs/remixers), representing Oakland, CA, have conspired together to take us on a magical adventure through sound. Their debut project comprises of 17 tracks that will capture your attention from beginning to end.

The music Dimond Saints creates is like a prism where it beams some bright and dark reflections. One moment you may feel like you're smashing, riding through galaxies in an old school Chevy, with all the windows down, blasting your music from a pristine sound system. Then, on one hand you may find yourself roaming through a dark forest in search for a way out, but eventually give up, lay down on a bed of evergreen branches, and just gaze up at the moon and stars embracing the mystical forces that surround you. Yes, this instrumental/remix project will take you there. All of their production work has a distinct bounce to it, and the chilling vocal samples chosen create a relatable impact. It allows the listener to connect with the producer's possible intention of making this song, which is always a plus when creating timeless music. I'm also very impressed with the sonics of this project as well. Well, give it a listen below and let me know how it makes you feel. Make sure to connect with Dimond Saints on your favorite social network to support their efforts in continuing to make music that we have never felt before and is simply out of this world. Brokechella: Brilliant Gems Brighten the Future

Gold writing on a blue wall with a ladder in front with spray cans on the groundPhoto credit: Lee Bishop

Some consider the best things in life are free, and well in this case Brokechella is almost free. The cost of entrance was $10 presale, $20 at the door or $25 for "Broke Passes" that covered your ticket, you received a bag of goodies and had access to the BIP (VIP) areas. As an avid event-goer we love options, and these prices are very affordable. This is the fourth year Brokechella celebrates the quality talent and diversity of emerging LA artists. I know it pierced your heart when you discovered Brokechella from your friend's Instagram picture with the hashtags: #goodtimes #dopemusic #thisbandrocks #lovetheearts #hesfunny #sofun #BROKECHELLA, but you quickly connected with your BFF and high-tailed it to the event. And for those that missed it, you MUST attend next year.
blue sky with painted yellow and red letters on sign
Brokechella, founded and curated by cARTel: Collaborative Arts LA joined forces with Brownies and Lemonade and Shifty Rhythms to bring you a top notch music festival as well as an interactive arts playground called, "Broke Kingdom". The popular 1920's warehouse filming location of 590 Sante Fe Studios housed the activities, LA culture and love for the day. It was held in the heart of the city, of downtown Los Angeles, CA on April 19, 2014. Yes, it was during the 2nd weekend of Coachella, but it drew a crowd of 4,000 beautiful artists, content creators, musicians, fashionistas, plane janes, hipsters, cool kids, loners, natives, transplants and the most recognizable group; true lovers of the arts.

The organizers of Brokechella had sustainability in mind, and partnered with the leading augmented reality developer Daquri, which created the 4D "Pocket Watch" and an app to be downloaded directly to your smartphone or tablet replacing the traditional bulky, not-so green brochure of set times. So, wherever you traveled in the Broke Kingdom you wouldn't miss the band you were looking forward to catching. As you frolicked around the lounge with a beer in hand from Lagunitas Brewing Co. while enjoying Starry Kitchen's balls in your mouth or trying the treats from the food trucks on foodie row. Moaning and groaning over the cute pups at Puppychella, spending your disposable income on some new, cool threads or shades from one of the trailer boutiques in the vendor marketplace. Even engaging in acts of KIND-ness or checking out the silent flicks and "Walk On Art" installations in the CFG Not-So-Silent Movie Theater. Okay, I think you get the point. There was so much to experience and all of your senses were being stimulated by the various forms of art. If you haven't already noticed I didn't even mention the music yet.

There were four stages: cARTel, Brownies and Lemonade, Shifty Rhythms and the Lounge, which are all separate entities showcasing their particular specialization of music. The cARTel stage had more of the indie rock band feel, Brownies and Lemonade had roots in hip hop, rap, r&b, soul and Shifty Rhythms focused more on electronic, bass, experimental, dance, future beats sound. The Lounge stage played to the singer/songwriter folk music audience, and this was where the comedy showcase was held. There were 50+ artists of immense talent that graced these stages. They enthusiastically shared their passion of artistic expression. The crowd and the performer connected because artists thrive off the energy, and the audience was so receptive, which always makes for memorable times for all involved.

Every band, group, duo, solo artist, visual artist or comedian at Brokechella this year have rich resumes. Many have received awards and accolades, produced multiple, high quality productions of work or are actively touring around the nation and/or the world. Here's a few highlights of some of the artists accomplishments:

  • Zibbz is a brother and sister trash pop, indie rock band from Switzerland that ranked #2 on the Swiss iTunes chart.
  • Greenhorse, an electronic duo, from Wyoming describes their sound as 80's industrial, Chicago house, psychedelia, pop music who had their music featured on SNL and MTV.
  • Hott MT, the Thai pop LA based collective, opened for the Flaming Lips as well as collaborated on a song with Flaming Lips front man Wayne Coyne.
  • Oh Blimey, a female emcee, has epic victories in the world's largest battle league, Grindtime Now. She also has a forthcoming EDM release with rap legend Too Short from Oakland, CA.
  • Alex Isley is the daughter of Ernie Isley, of the legendary Isley Brothers, writes and produces all of her music. The Love/Art Memoirs was my personal favorite album of 2012.
  • Duckwrth was featured in Afro-Punk and is an artistic genius.
  • Malcolm Mays is an all around entertainer. When he's not film-making his rapping vice versa.
  • The Doublemints produce sophistiratchet sounds to get the party started. Inspired by 90's music and the booty poppin of '99 and the 2000's.  Issa Rae, one of the group members, is the creator of the YouTube workplace-comedy series Awkward Black Girl, Ratchet Piece Theater, The "F" Word, and The Choir.
  • VerBS, an awesome rapper and member of the mighty Hellfyre Club, co-founded a platform in Leimert Park called, "Bananas" where he showcases musical artists from the indie, underground scene.
  • Raven Sorvino won the Best Female Rap Artist at the 2012 Underground Music Awards in New York. She's also worked with buzzing rap artists Casey Veggies and Problem.
  • Buddy, the lyricist, has production from some of the best in the game right now such as Pharrell, Cardo, Boi-1da and Chuck Inglish. He has features from Kendrick Lamar, Robin Thicke and Miley Cyrus on his latest project, "Idletime".
  • MOD Collective members Lil Texas, C.Z., Yung Satan with the Club, Trap, Bass, Electronic sound combined have shared the stage with acts such as Flosstradamus, DJ Snake, A-Trak, Shlohmo, Baauer and R.L. Grime.
  • Earnest Blount is a producer of beats and live visual art of the Wedidit Collective. He is also the co-founder of the audiovisual label Teaching Machine with Brainfeeder's Strangeloop.
  • Kittens is a female DJ and Hip Hop aficionado who toured with Kid Cudi and played for Usher.
  • Neo Fresco is the founder of the LA based collective and label Shifty Rhythms who has worked with Diplo, the founder of Mad Decent.
  • Liza Oppenheimer is one artist you have to pay attention to her lyrics or you will miss the essence of her witty artistry that has gained her just after 3 gigs, a monthly residency at Bar Lubitsch. Her 4th performance was House of Blues and her 5th performance was Viper Room *DROPS MIC*.
  • Sammy Obeid, from Oakland, CA, holds the record for achieving 1,001 consecutive days of comedy performances. He's appeared on America's Got Talent and is the first comedian to ever perform on the food network. His debut album, "Get Funny or Die Trying" was named by iTunes as the Best Comedy Album of 2013.
Brokechella completely impressed me in every area. They seriously thought your thoughts even before you had them. I also have to point out just because something is perceived as inexpensive doesn't mean it won't run like a well-oiled machine. After poking around in a few places it all makes sense to me why Brokechella was such a success. It may have started from small gatherings of artists wanting to share their craft with other artists known as, "Community Pool" at a coffee shop in Venice, CA, but cARTel had vision and passion to create a lane to express themselves. They planted the seeds, watered them, fertilized them, and watched the fruits of their labor grow. I'm sure they encountered many obstacles and road blocks, but all those challenges molded them into the seasoned team they are today. Everyone played their part in making Brokechella shine. "LONG LIVE THE BROKE KINGDOM!"

Listen Up! Pawz One "Face the facts"

hip hop album cover art with political musical legends

Pawz One has surely made his mark in Hip Hop with his debut album "Face the facts". Many artists today try to capture the essence of the "golden era" of Hip Hop sound and feel, but Pawz One has accomplished this one track at a time. "Face the facts" started off great and ended exceptional. This is a solid collection of work that touches on many aspects of the everyday life of a go-getter seasoned by every experience encountered.

The music that many up-and-coming rap, or dare I say "hip hop" artists record today are faking it until they make it. Many of us engaged in the music industry KNOW you aren't popping bottles of Ace of Spades everyday, you borrow apparel, whips and fly eye candy to create an image that you think people want to see. It's not you. It's just so inauthentic and felt through the music with the nursery rhyme lyrics and superficial content. Times are changing and the people want more. If you don't believe me ask Macklemore & Ryan Lewis who swept every rap category at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards.

"Face the facts" gives us more to listen to and relate to. "It's straight from the heart and represents REAL HIP HOP because Pawz One uplifts the listener, brings awareness to social injustice within our communities ("Officer Down"), and tells a story in a genius way (PLEASE listen to "Blood Brothers") with his swift and slick rhymes, "Bringing It Back" to the origins of Hip Hop. I swear after listening to this album you become smarter or at least it leaves you inspired and ready to take on the world with tracks like "What You Make It".

As hard hitting as this album is there was room for a love song, called "You Could Be". It wasn't mushy or corny or out of place. It was perfect in every way of how a woman imagines to be loved by a real man not a little boy. It also has many feel good anthems celebrating the good life of simply enjoying your loved ones with "My Night". I also enjoyed the "Defstrumental" lyrical breaks that you could break ya' neck to and make those screw faces to ahaha okay maybe that's just me, but the producers Default and Breeze came with the soulful, funky-smooth, straight boom-bap SLAPS! So good. Make sure to support REAL, TRUE Hip Hop by attending Pawz One's shows when he comes to a city near you, follow him on his social networks and of course PURCHASE "Face the facts"! Buy on iTunes, or HERE, Pawz One Website, Facebook, Twitter, Soundcloud, YouTube
