Listen Up! Amin Payne - "George Benson Tribute"

Black man in purple suit playing guitar

Australian producer/DJ Amin Payne did such a beautiful job capturing the goodness of George Benson with this tribute project. When I first came across this album I was so excited to see how one of my new-favorite "new-school" producers showcased the smooth-scat singing, jazz guitarist who ruled the 80's (had the first platinum jazz album in 1976) with his sensual situations that just made you comprehend true romance eventhough some songs were instrumentals. Amin Payne's tools of choice used in recreating this George Benson experience were vinyl-only samples, live instruments and percussion. I particularly loved how he constructed these songs so seamlessly pulling the perfect vocal samples and guitar licks that truly represent the George Benson sound that I've come to appreciate so much.

I have a special place in my heart for jazz music because of my Uncle Vincent. When we ride up to northern California from southern California for the holidays or special occasions we share music with eachother. Whoever isn't driving is the DJ. My uncle is well-versed in jazz and I would say his flavor is also soulful, adult contemporary R&Bish music from the 1930's to present day. He has exposed me to so much good music it's unbelievable, and is always a joy to hear where many of the samples in today's music originated. I'm excited for our next meeting of the iPhones/iPods again for the holidays. He better be ready because I'm going to blow him away with this Amin Payne George Benson Tribute. George Benson is one of his favorite artists. I WIN! Haaaa

I strongly suggest you press play on this one because it's the perfect soundtrack for so many situations. It is TSFW (totally safe for work), to study, cool out and watch the rain fall and totally get lost in the music or just show off to the old-schoolers that the new-schoolers got it too. Real music is coming back. Don't believe me? Just watch. Okay, bad reference to use, but you get it lol.

Make sure you check out some of Amin Payne's other music production. He has so many goodies that will just stretch your mind and break yo neck at the same time. Enjoy the journey! Bandcamp Soundcloud Facebook

Listen Up! denitia and sene. "his and hers." and more!

purple vintage cassette tape with clear front and handwriting

Many times I sit and contemplate what draws me to artists like denitia and sene. and it seems to always come down to the authenticity felt, the details and the cleverness of the presentation. And of course the balance of creating new artistic boundaries as well as allowing the listener to hold close what's familiar.

Every song by denitia and sene. are standout tracks, but when you experience them collectively like with their album "his and hers." you really get a feel for how much they pour themselves into their music while having fun creating together. It totally shows. They are what the games been missing. They are the perfect dynamic, stylistic duo where their vocals complement each other over sene's transcending productions. Denitia and sene. 's music resonates so well with me, like many of the other artists I feature here on Really Not Radio, is that you can't place them in a cute little box and limit their reach by applying labels to their sound. Music and artistry is to be felt and is perceived by everyone differently yet the universal outcome is that it's just good music that you will find yourself pressing play over and over again for weeks ha. True story.

There are so many things I love about these two even down to their story of meeting at a collective, creative space in Brooklyn, NY one night to how they use lower case letters and punctuation just because. To the cleverness of down to earth lyrics to vocal arrangements and using silence in the right places as sound makes an impact. As well as the understanding to use sounds that are ear-catching down to the warm sonics of the mix and using all the space in the mix. Yes, I pay attention to all of these things and that's why I know denitia and sene. will be around for a long time if they choose to.

I wasn't surprised to learn that their musical influences range from Sade to Crosby, Stills and Nash, The Beatles to Janet Jackson because of  the versatility of songs experienced from the album "his and hers.". At first listen I felt elements of Sade, City High and JDavey...and genres...and eras like alternative, r&b, dance and hip hop from the 60's-80's-90's with a denitia and sene. flair, which is so cool to me. I'm not going to keep you much longer so you can get into the smooth sexiness, but just a few last remarks lol. They create the type of music that if heard at a bar/lounge you would instantly start dancing like no one is watching *hands in the air and eyes closed doing your lil sexy dance thinking about that one*. Or better yet there's something you've been wanting to tell that special someone, but haven't worked up the nerve to say it? Play them a denitia and sene. song and keep your fingers crossed in hopes they listen to lyrics LOL. Well, alright as usual make sure you support dope artists and their music by attending shows when they are in your area, buy merch and at the very least press play on their music and connect with them on your favorite social networks! Enjoy! Website YouTube Facebook Twitter Soundcloud

Listen Up! The Black Opera "80z Babiez To The 2Gz (The ExperiMix)"

album cover TBO Radio Black background with red logo hip hop

The intro track from The Black OpEra's "80z Babiez To The 2Gz" Experimix takes you on a trip through time by sharing snippets of Hip Hop classics. Setting the tone with a wide range of artists from Public Enemy to Chubb Rock to Souls of Mischief to Jay-Z. I'm sure there were many goals in mind with the presentation of this album, which you can feel from the thoughtful flow of the track transitions. However, the stated purpose was to show that there are no rules when creating timeless music. This concept is reinforced by having a new school MC flow over old school style beats from some of Hip Hop's most influential artists between the 80's to 2000's. It's impressive how they flowed over so many different types of instrumentals and never skipped a beat with their delivery. The Black OpEra has great versatility as well as intelligence and awareness of the state of today's music.

I really appreciate this project and The Black OpEra as artists because they are representing and speaking on thoughts that I have and many other lovers of music, specifically, Hip Hop share. Many people who don't like Hip Hop are quick to write it off because they don't understand it and choose not to take the time to listen. They just hear it. Hip Hop is poetic. It is real life. But honestly, some of today's "Hip Hop" or I like to call it "Pop Rap" that we hear on the major radio stations or that top the charts, is far from the Hip Hop my generation were exposed to growing up. So, I don't blame the Hip Hop haters because the mainstream music is point-blank self destructive.

All the glorification of big butts, twerking, prescription drugs, violence, endless bottle popping, disrespecting "bitches", coveting material items (that are most likely rented or were given to the artist as a business transaction) has society, and especially our youth idolizing and focusing on things that aren't real or things that are only temporal. I think I'm finally a believer that life imitates art and art's influence, especially, Hip Hop has the power to change the course of society. Yet many music artists say they aren't role models, but they are. Much is given, much is required. Yes, parents are ultimately responsible for raising their children, but it takes a community. Many children are raised predominantly by one parent whether from a parent choosing not to be involved or separation/divorce. You can't protect your children 24 hours a day from what crosses their path, but in about 20 years or less we will see the repercussions of today's action or actually in-action. We need more artists like The Black OpEra to penetrate the mainstream and redirect the influence Hip Hop has on society and the youth to limit some of the hate, bullying and suicides that are increasing at alarming rates these days.

Once upon a time Hip Hop brought awareness to societal, political and to the edification of self. I want those days back because there needs to be a better balance and a better representation of what's real and what's lasting for our community. This is why the "Golden Era" of music is still in heavy rotation with those in my generation because it's truly timeless and makes you feel something. A lot of songs that come out today makes me wonder what was the point of this song? What are you bringing to the game? How are you going to push the envelope and elevate Hip Hop? Or are you just making a song to throw in the pile of other songs of no originality and follow the current trend. Yes, you make a good run and collect a few paychecks, but you won't be remembered 20, 5,  better yet 1 year from now the way music is released just about every minute. What do you want to be remembered for? What will be your legacy? The Black OpEra provokes thought on the song "Koon Shit" asking do you be an actor or kick knowledge? The choice is yours.

Don't get me wrong I like to have a good time too, and was the turn up queen, but as I get older, you become wiser and understand what the priorities of life should be, and how to realize true success. Lately, I'm feeling like forget about "turn up", and more about TURN PAGES! Why can't or isn't that cool, marketable or profitable? I have my own personal answers, but more curious as to what you think. Leave a comment or hit me on our social networks to continue this discussion.

Also, make sure you press play on this album and really listen to it. Don't just hear it like I know many people do with some of today's music because I'm pretty sure they have to just be listening to the beat because if some knew and understood the lyrics they would be singing to a different tune. Word? Word.

Audio: Au Courant! Alex Isley "DreamsInAnalog"

I've been waiting for this album since she released Love/Art Memoirs, which is hands-down my favorite album of 2012. Love/Art Memoirs gave a personal account of a relationship that she was either involved in, or knew about, from the past. DreamsInAnalog speaks more of a present, continual, fluid relationship that is familiar and resurfacing from the past that she's willing to give this "love" another go. You will get the run down from the lead track "So Here It Goes" featuring Paris Strother from KING!

DreamsInAnalog was written and produced by Alex Isley, which I just love for several reasons. The project is very personal, which is evident in all the details in production, the vocal arrangements, the lyrics, the content and even the cover art speaks volumes in itself. I feel when you produce your own album you know exactly what and how you are going to convey the song to the listener, and there's really no right or wrong way...because it's your art. Oh, what a feeling. Some of you may know that I have a special place in my heart for 7 minute songs, so the fact that the average duration of each track on this album is 5 minutes gives DreamsInAnalog bonus points on top of my standard criterion to give an album the "baby Stace Stamp of Approval" lol. It's weird because at first listen I didn't realize the length of the songs because you are caught up in the musical journey. From her soft, warm, angelic, saturating tone of her vocals to the super sexy, deep drums along with the pitter patter pulsating drums that give each song a heartbeat, the percussive samples and lush pads create the perfect movement and life throughout the album. The last thing I have to mention about her production is that she picks the best sounds that don't compete for position in the mix, so that you can hear and feel the depth of each track. Brilliant.

Alex Isley has a gift of pulling you into her relatable stories and makes you understand what you're feeling in your own relationship. DreamsInAnalog gives hope at that love that hasn't left and is still there to explore, and you find that after all this time you "Still Care". You may be reaching "For the Stars" and questioning if coming back to this familiar place is the right move, but "The Other Side" of it all is that the sun is shining on your new day, and just from their look and from hearing their voice makes you smile. So, it's all worth it to forgive and try our hand at love again because being with you feels so good, and to just come "Closer" because there's nothing better "About Him". It's so funny that I have so many instant favorites on this album and DreamsInAnalog just dropped today. This album will be in heavy rotation for awhile. There's just so much to listen to, and each time you listen to a song you will hear or be reminded of something different than the last listen. Great feeling.

Lastly, I LOVE the cover art. I guess I'm an "analog girl caught up in a digital world". Digital, is so cut and dry, bright with pre-determined settings. It's simple to deal with and the channels and signal flow paths are endless, but sometimes too many choices may lead to never achieving the desired or destined outcome. Analog, there are more gray areas with the potential settings, it's more hands on and out the box and not as many options, but it's fluid, it's continuous, it's noisy, it's warm, it's the foundation, it's the beginning....yeah...."DreamsInAnalog" is the beginning of a new era................

Make sure to support Alex Isley and the beautiful music she's creating for us by downloading her album and connect with her on her social networks to ACTIVELY show your support. Just looking and saying you like something isn't enough for independent artists to get to the next level. The numbers are EVERYTHING! Connect with Alex Isley here: Facebook, Twitter, Soundcloud

What IS Really Not Radio?

Do you want to discover new Music or what’s “next” in Music? When asked who is your favorite artist or what type of Music do you like is your immediate response, “I have too many favorites to pick just one, and I LOVE allllll types of Music.” We would like to personally invite you to connect with the Really Not Radio first class listening experience that helps you to discover your new favorite up and coming, independent artists across all genres.

*Now Playing* One of the best features of Really Not Radio is that you never know what to expect when you press play. Your senses will be overwhelmed with the progressive nature of the Music, but you’re okay with that because it just feels so right. Many of the artists featured draw from various styles of music, so it’s not easy to label or place in a particular genre. Really Not Radio is truly for the Music connoisseur in YOU!

Really Not Radio is curated by baby Stace and is the radio personality and editor. All the Music and artist features are hand-picked by baby Stace after experiencing an artists’ live performance or spending time with each song or album. This ensures the selection receives the baby Stace stamp of approval before sharing with our valued listener. At Really Not Radio talent matters, NOT who you know. We believe in sharing only quality Music, and not interested in the quantity of what we publish. It’s all about the Music and “We Hear”.

There’s a great balance of nonsense and substance to keep you thoroughly entertained with our specialty shows like, “Hip Hop Ain’t Dead…It’s On Really Not Radio” or “Neo Cool”. Not only do we keep a pulse on what’s up and coming, we believe in preserving the foundations of Music through our tribute shows like, “Just Luther…Is Never Too Much” or the “baby Stace Classiques”. Begin at our doorstep, the official entry point for Really Not Radio www.reallynotradioshow.com or our various social networking sites where you will encounter a different side or room of Really Not Radio.  Feel right at home, kick your feet up and stay awhile with the volume turned UP. Show love, “Like” us on Facebook. Come as you are; “Follow” us on Twitter. Stay in the loop, “Join” us on Google+ and live art through Music with us on Instagram all @reallynotradio. The Really Not Radio show is aired on KHPZ Radio Network every first and last Saturday of each month from 5 – 7pm PST.

*Rewind* Really Not Radio sparked after a Memorial Day vacation in 2004, to South Beach, FL., baby Stace wanted to capture the essence, and keep the trip alive through the Music. Music is felt, lived and not just heard. Music is relatable and many times it’s hard to find the right words to express yourself, but there’s a perfect song for every emotion. There’s nothing new under the sun, but there are new and interesting ways to express the same things. The origin of Really Not Radio is to give listeners alternatives because there is so much Music out here that will never make it to the radio, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be heard. Too much real good, feel good Music is slipping through the cracks and lost forever. Really not Radio was created to be the platform to catch the crème de la crème to share with the masses.

*Fast Forward* Really Not Radio has grown substantially since inception and continues to rise because of our faithful and supportive listeners worldwide. Really Not Radio wouldn't mind expanding if the perfect opportunity presented itself. So, for the time being press Play....and enjoy the music.

Live Performance: Moses Sumney - Bootleg Bar Performance

silhouette of a man with his hair twisted and blue background

Last night I had the pleasure to enjoy a FREE show at the Bootleg Bar in Los Angeles, CA featuring the soulful, love sounds of KING and Moses Sumney. To date this was the best free show I've ever attended simply because of the pure talent and quality of each performing artist. Moses Sumney opened up the show and prepared the atmosphere. Before last night I was aware of Moses Sumney from his recordings on Soundcloud and YouTube, and I've always felt like his sound was so full of life even when contained on a record. His cover of Lindisfarne by James Blake captured my heart with all of his percussive adlibs and harmonies, which formed the layers to build this masterful sound.

When I first discover artists I can quickly point out who they sound like to me, but Moses Sumney truly has his own distinguished voice. Experiencing Moses' music live has done more for me than simply make direct artist comparisons. He gave me feelings and ideas. He reminded me of artists that can REALLY sing and create on a whim like Take 6, Al Jarreau, The McFerrins. Then, he took me to a time period where music had a soulful, classic, refined sound like the crooners Sam Cooke and Frank Sinatra. The last element necessary to mention that helps to shape his sound is more of a statement. I believe he will have international appeal because of his passion, message and poetic lyrics like Sting or Seal. Moses Sumney has got "IT". It's going to be really exciting to journey along with his musical career because I envision big things for him like performing at the white house or other first class events. Moses Sumney is the type of talent no one can deny, no matter what walk of life you are from. He is really this good!

You have to catch his live performance because it is such a treat to watch and hear him create the percussive layers of sound right before your eyes. Moses Sumney IS music and I'm convinced that everything on, in or around him is an instrument lol. So, whether he's beatboxing, clapping, humming, popping his tongue, strumming his guitar, adding melodic vocals or even silence, just know that the end result will leave you astonished. He is the definition of a true entertainer because the way he interacts with his audience charming us with his playful, humorous banter while allowing us to be apart of the show lending a clap, snap or holler ALWAYS makes for a good time! Last night, good times were had by all leaving us wanting more...ENCORE! ENCORE! Per usual support up and coming, independent artists by attending their shows, buying their albums or simply connecting with them on your favorite social network! http://mosessumney.com/ Twitter, Facebook, Soundcloud.

Beat Tape: Laglös "Soulsticio"

bright geometric abstract art with black background

Laglös a member of the Illegal Parnassus Group originally from AGS, Mexico blessed us with the second beattape "Soulsticio" from his soulful beats series. He's an Emcee and Beatmaker, and I'm very excited that there will be two more album releases to follow this project. "Soulsticio" is 32 tracks with 3 bonus tracks of heavily sampled instrumentals from various genres of 70's Soul, Funk and a dab of Disco. Laglös' production style tells a story without any lyrics, but I know several versatile Hip Hop artists that would enjoy adding their two cents to his tracks.

This album will keep your day moving in the right direction or make your day that much better with it's upbeat, cheerful, rich sound that is truly medicine for the soul. Laglös' influences include 9th Wonder, Pete Rock, J Dilla, Damu the Fudgemunk, Easy Mo Bee and Nuff Ced. Uh yeah, you should press Play like right now right now if you haven't already. Laglös ROCKS with the best of 'em. Also, you can find this album on his Bandcamp page as a free download. Remember to support independent artists by downloading, purchasing their album or simply connecting with them on the web to keep up with all their happenings. Numbers are everything to an up and coming, independent artists from all industries. Here's Laglös' Facebook, Myspace and YouTube.

Audio: Listen Up! Damien Escobar "Sensual Melodies"

piano keys treble clef pictured

The good folks over at Afro Punk posted a video of a violinist playing along to Miguel's "Adorn", so of course it caught my attention to press play. For one, I la la la LOVE strings, and I also have a special place in my heart for Miguel's music. I was blown away by Damien Escobar's personality and performance on the video, so I looked up his referenced mixtape "Sensual Melodies". I discovered that I KNOW this guy, he's one-half of the Emmy award winning duo Nuttin' But Stringz who I've been following for quite some time. I've been wanting to feature them on Really Not Radio for the longest, and finally the time is now to at least get one of the brother's on the site. Perfect timing to be apart of instrumental, beat, slaps month here on Really Not Radio.

Dame Esco's "Sensual Melodies" mixtape, which is the romantic first installment of the 4-part mixtape series hits the sweet spot. He picked some of my favorite classic and contemporary R&B songs for this project, and he did every single song justice with his beautiful instrumentation. His crooning violin is the perfect supplemental vocal over the beat. So, delicate, so right. My goodness. I can't wait for you to hear this. Trust me you won't want this romantic, emotional journey to end. He will leave you wanting more. As usual make sure you support gifted artists such as Jamaica, Queens' own Damien Escobar by downloading or purchasing his albums, attending shows when he's in a city near you or simply connect with him on your favorite social network! Audio: Listen Up! The Stuyvesants "Refined"

Here on Really Not Radio I've declared June to be the month of the producer to showcase and highlight the dopest producers I discover from all over the globe across all genres. After dropping the debut show for "Just Gimme A Beat" this past week where Really Not Radio brought you nothing but instrumentals, beats, slaps, remixes and bangers I bring you a "Refined" style from The Stuyvesants. Algorythm and Flwrpt make up The Stuyvesants production duo based out of Brooklyn, NY. They bring so much character to the music they create through their love and passion for vintage vinyl sounds and graphic design.

"Refined" is an all instrumental album that has a very smooth feel where you may or may not recognize some of the samples chosen and I LOVE the drums. The music is just so GOOD. What I find particularly cool is that they have cover art to accompany each track, which takes you back through a time where the house parties were out of sight, the women were classy-sexy, the men were dressed from head to toe, car interiors were plush and EVERYONE'S afro was tight and alright! Oh, how I love the 70's. Make sure to link up with The Stuyvesants on your favorite social network, support them and keep up with all their happenings. Explore their website because they have a gang of other music goodies, and cool merch www.thestuyvesants.com.

Audio: Listen Up! REL

Album Cover Art City View of blurred street lights

To get you into the spirit of a new Really Not Radio show called "Just Gimme A Beat", which features ONLY beats, instrumentals, grooves and vibes that will showcase and highlight the producer. The producer is such a key component to a solid song in my opinion. When a song is produced correctly it speaks volumes and creates the lyrics. That's why many emcees can spit or freestyle over dope beats because the rhythm or soul of the song is felt as they speak their minds. I have to also mention that lyrics can give shape and bring life to a beat, so it's so important to network and find the right producer to be able to communicate both of your vision to the listener. Enter in REL, who was born in New York, NY, but was raised in San Francisco, CA. He's a cinematographer, musician, audio engineer and was the director/producer for an independent Bay Area hip hop TV show called Distortion 2 Static for 10 years. He's also among many other dope artists and producers on the SWTBRD's (Sweetbreads Creative Collective) label. REL's passion for his craft and lifestyle is heard and seen in every project he's apart of whether it be music, TV, video or other cultural events presented to preserve the art of hip hop and music as a whole.

REL is such a multi-faceted person who will be successful at anything he puts his hand to, but for today I'm just going to touch on his music production. His music can stand on its own without lyrics while making you feel like you just experienced an entire story by the song's end. His beats are so multi-dimensional and asymmetric. What I mean by asymmetric is that you never feel like he's brought back the same loops after initial use. His beats are unpredictable and the music NEVER gets boring, which is a major plus for music connoisseurs like myself. He also uses the right sounds to grab your attention. Picking your samples when you create a beat is soooo important. It can really make or break the final outcome of the song, especially in the mixing stage. I also really love the vocal samples he chooses to use. They fit so perfectly, and he cuts them up and places them into the production seamlessly. His beats are just so rich and full of life, and they are great for any occasion whether you're walking down the street or on the train with your headphones on, at work, doing homework or at a kickback on a beautiful sun shiny day. REL is super fresh and many artists from Northern California and beyond have and are discovering his dopeness. Emcees, if you get a beat from REL your fans will mos def listen and pay attention. Invest in yourself and holla at REL. Support his efforts by buying his albums, downloading the music or the very least follow him on your favorite social network! Twitter, Facebook, Soundcloud . Audio: Listen Up! Adrian Marcel "7 Days of Weak"

man with black leather jacket and watch on

Shayla Bang, with Headbanger Accessories, threw an extravagant bash in the Bay Area earlier this month to celebrate her company's 5 year anniversary. They create some of the most eye-catching earrings in existence, and throw the most fashion forward events in the Bay. I was dissapointed I wasn't in town to be there, but I was even more blue when I found out they were giving Adrian Marcel's "7 Days of Weak" album away to those in attendance. After reading Shayla's endorsement along with seeing that Raphael Saadiq presented the album I had no choice, but to pay attention. Adrian Marcel's "7 Days of Weak" began to pop up everywhere over the next couple of days. His team pushed the album down all the right avenues and flooded the streets. The way they handled their business was real and it was great to witness. Why would I expect anything less from an East Oakland, CA native. Adrian Marcel and "7 Days of Weak" is such a massive album for the Bay Area and R&B. What I love about the Bay is that the city gets behind their artists, and the artists rep their city to the fullest. There's soooo much genuine love in the Bay it's felt through the Music for sure. As Raphael Saadiq mentioned in the intro track that Adrian Marcel has a responsibility (yes, it's that serious) to show the world what he's bringing to the Music game as those greats who came before him from the Bay like Sheila E, Sly Stone and Larry Graham to name a few. Yeah, no pressure at all right?!? lol Adrian Marcel should be feeling really good right about now because this album is such a solid project and has all the right elements to be a classic album with many hit singles. Adrian Marcel collaborated on this album with standout producers and major artists, which speaks volumes in itself for a debut project. I can't wait for you to hear the album and get this feeling. The Music has a fresh-funk, sexy R&B feel laced with his soothing vocals telling you about some steamy situations and scenarios. He is just so Bay, so real and will have you "Wrapped" in his love in no time. I love the whole album, but the tracks close to my heart are: "Caught Up", "I'm Still", "Dope Dealer", "My Life", "Fuck With Me", "Don't Disturb This Groove", "Wrapped" and "Waiting". Yup, pretty much the whole album...my fault lol. Well, enough of my blabbing I'm going to let you get into the Music so pour you a glass of something, spark, turn the Music up, lay back and enjoy the sound of Adrian Marcel. Make sure to link up with him on your favorite social network (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Website), download for free "7 Days of Weak" and go to his shows when he's in a city near you!
