Audio: Listen Up! Miki Vale "The Good, The Bad & The Lovely"

Miki Vale's "The Good, The Bad & The Lovely" paints a few vivid and detailed portraits of the faces and stages of the beautiful struggle we know as "love". This 5 track album takes you from the beginning to the end of intimate relationships and touches on all the emotions, thoughts and actions in between. Her lyrics are riddled with penetrating and witty lines that will rock you to the core because you've either felt that way or wish you said that to an ex lover. Don't get me wrong she says some very lovely, moving things as well on this album that take you to that moment when love felt like it was forever and would never leave you. Miki Vale's soft, smooth voice with a strong purpose resonates deeply as if she's speaking directly to you. Her confident flow and delivery makes you want to keep listening, and wonder what thoughts and feelings will be provoked next. A good album is like a good movie, so I don't want to ruin the experience for you too much, but I just have to point out how this is such a solid project. The Music that's been finding me lately points back to artists who truly care about their craft and has true passion for the Music, and just totally gets it without even trying. It's just apart of their being. It just comes naturally. Okay, so I'm getting off topic a bit as usual, but I have to make sure you understand the brilliance of "The Good, The Bad & The Lovely". The album instantly grabs you with a FONKY groove behind spoken words of the Taurus setting the stage that fades out and into 'The Next'. This is where the initial meeting takes place between the two and the potential of love begins to bud. It's time to embark on a new adventure together so "lace up your shoe strings baby lets go". The next track 'Special Way' featuring Rachel Evans, clearly, everything is feeling oh so good and there's no separating the two. Then, with the telling track 'Worth It' something happened to that special bond once believed would never be dissolved. Still not sure what really happened or even who's at fault, but there's mos def trouble in paradise. And everyone has their truth in the situation, BUT you are convinced that whatever the problem it shouldn't have ruined what you had. Plus, "I'm worth it, I'm perfect"...duh. The story begins and ends with 'Love'. This track pretty much confirms the feelings of uncertainty, and the harsh reality sits in that it's time to move on and find love elsewhere. Wow, then it's over. Just like any good movie it leaves you with many questions and eagerly awaiting the sequel. I also have to mention that "The Good, The Bad & The Lovely" had the perfect release date of 2/14/13 when cupid was most active shooting arrows and mending hearts and ish on Valentine's day. Genius. Well, as usual support uber dope, independent artists like Miki Vale and connect with her on your favorite social network (Twitter, Facebook, Sleeping Giant Website) to keep up with all of her happenings and purchase "The Good, The Bad & The Lovely" from her site along with other cool merch.

Audio: Listen Up! Jai Paul

Update: I'm somewhat saddened to say that someone leaked this album and uploaded it to a faux Bandcamp profile without the artist or the record labels knowledge. That's just too bad, but the good news is I have the leaked album on CD for my personal listening pleasure and won't be posting it online. We just have to wait for the official release, which is exciting because that means more NEW MUSIC from Jai!! Here's an article that goes further into detail as to what happened.

Ooooh YESSSSS it's here and it's an instant party at 6:47am on a beautiful Sunday morning! I've been waiting for Jai Paul to drop for sooooo long! Every since I heard "BTSTU" some years back, then his follow up single "Jasmine" I've been hooked on the musical experience this man provides! Man. YOU ARE NOT READY! Progressive Music at it's finest. Jai Paul also received some shine on Big Boi's latest album release 'Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors'. I really appreciated Big Boi's album because he featured several great indie artists. Much props and love for that Boi. You have no idea I'm sooooo groovin' right now to this, Track 7 is the ish haaaaaa. I'm telling you! I would tell you the song, but the album doesn't have any track titles. I wonder what the significance is behind that, but it's kind of cool. As of late most people don't know the name of the songs anyways they may refer to a record as "Track whatever whatever" most of the time nowadays. Anywho, he's just so interesting to me. I can't wait for you to hear what Rayner's Lane, London singer/songwriter, record producer Jai Paul is bringing to the table. Prepare to be impressed because he's coming at you with a sound all of his own...YESSSSZZZZ! Please purchase this album to support dope, independent artists. We need more Music like this in our lives.

Audio & Video: Queen Kandi Cole "Due Diligence"

A puzzle of woman's face with black glasses on

“…imagine Da Brat & Busta Rhymes got together at Auntie Lyte & Uncle Dilla’s house for Sunday dinner and cooked up a MONSTER!” This is an excerpt I pulled from her bio, which I felt was a fitting intro to spark the dialogue to help explain the depth and substance of Queen Kandi Cole the artist, and what to expect from her latest release "Due Diligence". Queen Kandi Cole is a true Hip Hop emcee who will encourage you, provoke you to reach higher in thought and action. As well as provide you with knowledge, which will make you want to google some thangs. Lately, I find myself in conversations time and time again that artists like Queen Kandi Cole are re-routing the direction of hip hop Music. I feel there's an awakening, and it's time for the golden era of hip hop and Music period to find it's original voice and make it's way back around. The people want more than what's currently pushed down our ears from mainstream media. Enter in "Due Diligence", which takes you down a road or shall I say a musical history lesson with tracks like "I Want Music" and "Back In The Day" featuring Oakland's own Siaira Shawn. Then, the next several songs gives you the raw, uncut bars and piercing word play from the mind of the Queen laced over soulful, grooves from her go-to producer pOETiqbEETz. A couple comments I need to make before I get out of here is that every song on "Due Diligence" should be the soundtrack for a good, timeless movie you never get tired of watching over and over like "Do The Right Thing", "Higher Learning" or "Brown Sugar" yeah, that's it Brown Sugar. Quality films, quality Music. I also really enjoyed that this project was all connected and flowed into the next song just like when albums had interludes and not just a bunch of singles slapped together. This type of detail shows care and love for the Music and will be an epic piece for every music collector's arsenal.Woooh, okay, I made it through...she has a song on the album called, "Passing Judgement" for my types ;-) As usual make sure to connect with Queen Kandi Cole on your favorite social network to keep up with her and her Music. She always has shows either as a solo artist her with her collective The (Sis)tem or duo 50/50.Queen Kandi Cole will be performing at the Clive Davis Grammy Museum in Downtown Los Angeles April 12, 2013 for the 'Be Heard Artist Showcase', and her release party for "Due Diligence" is April 14, 2013. Audio & Video: Listen Up! AEli "Reminiscing With Wine"

brown paper bag with character faces red wine goblets

Here's one artist I would love to sit and share multiple 4 oz. pours with just to get to get into his "Pulphead" for a minute. Give me a sec, I'll explain, but AEli is my type of person. A thinker, creator and has depth. AEli, pronounced "Aye Eli" from Los Angeles, CA is a producer, engineer and recording artist from the Elephant In The Room (EiTR) collective. After listening to his debut project "Reminiscing With Wine" I couldn't really put into words what I was feeling from the sound he created, but I knew I liked it from the top to the bottom of the album, and all the way through. Nowadays, you're lucky if you get 2 or 3 really good songs on a 10 track album, but if you get 5 or more you it would be consider a good album. "Reminiscing With Wine" has 13 straight versatile bangers, and once the album meets it's demise you're like, "it's over already? I want more." Trust me, repeat times 2 at the very least. After looking into AEli a bit further I discovered he has coined his sound as "Pulphead". To sum it up, Pulphead is a genre he's created where you can't put a label on the artist or the sound because it has too many musical styles mixed into it. Pulphead, also captures the idea that you may not be able to identify the person, but you will understand and feel the emotion that person is trying to portray. I can dig it, cuz it's deep. I totally get it. I knew there was a reason I was drawn to AEli's music because Really Not Radio is "Pulphead" based on the definition. The common emotion, feeling, message you will be able to recognize and relate to from the Music shared, but it comes from so many different types of genres and artists. Yet the goal is to impact you and help you to discover your new favorite artists no matter the genre. Okay, well let me reel this in because this is about AEli not Really Not Radio right now lol. My fault. It happens. Let me stop my yapping and wrap it up and say you are going to thoroughly enjoy AEli, especially his voice. The production is great too. AEli is the kind of artist that gives you substance and something to hold onto. As he and his Music evolves you will evolve right along with it. He won't fail you because his passion and love for the Music is so authentic. You can hear it clearly from the Music and the care for his recordings. Let me step back and let you get into the Music. Make sure to connect with AEli on your favorite social network to keep up with all of his happenings. Especially, look out for his forthcoming mixtape, "The Void" dropping, tentatively June 30, 2013. Here, I made it easy for you, your welcome. Free Download of "Reminiscing With Wine" Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, YouTube, Soundcloud.

Audio: Listen Up! James Cavern

Man with hat and glasses on with a mustache and plaid shirt

James Cavern, an Englishman from London, is such an interesting fellow who understands that good Music will be felt no matter what the genre. He has spent most of his musical career collaborating with Hip Hop, R&B, Folk, Soul, Reggae and Rock artists using his vocal instrument and acoustic guitar. His voice is simply beautiful and powerful, coupled with his guitar and penetrating lyrics he gives you no option, but to pay attention. You can feel all of his musical influences deeply with his latest release, "The Pilot" EP. I was introduced to James Cavern from stumbling across the intimate video recordings called, "The Porch Sessions" on YouTube. Soooo good and sooooo personal, I instantly LOVED the vibe. So, I'm going to quit my yappin' and let you get into the Music just how I discovered him. I'm totally setting you up lol. Audio: Listen Up! Atu

beautiful woman with flowing hair art

There's a trend in electronic music right now where producers take familiar pitched down vocal samples, throw them on top of heavy 808's, with a dreamy pad, add some glitches here and there, build some progression, and the Music will mos def make you move and do the "New Harlem Shake" or something. However, Atu (Atupele Ndisale) incorporates many of those elements mentioned above into his designed beats, but he also brings a major component into the mix to make the Music timeless...some SOUL. Everything flows just right and makes you want to close your eyes and take you there...yeah right there. You can even get your two-step on. You would never know Atu is a 20 year old producer, engineer because what he creates is so grown and sexy. He was born in Abidjan, Ivory Coast (from Malawi), and has lived many places, but currently resides in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He just released an album called "Pictures On Silence" where all proceeds will go to Every Child in hopes of providing some financial assistance based in rural areas of Malawi in southeast Africa. A beautiful way to give back, which is a very honorable act in my opinion. Make sure to support Atu by purchasing his album and linking with him on Twitter and Soundcloud.

Video: Listen Up! Adrian Bellue

man standing tall with acoustic Alvarez Baritone guitar

Adrian Bellue, a fingerstyle guitarist from Sacramento, CA reached out and grabbed my attention when I pressed play on a YouTube video one of my fellow peers from Sacramento City College shared some time last year. I've been patiently waiting for more details to emerge on Adrian Bellue, and I'm ecstatic to say that his story has been in full swing. However, he's now stepping out and sharing his gift with the rest of us. Adrian Bellue isn't just another typical acoustic guitar player. He plays with a felt passion and a very clear purpose. He aims to "heal and inspire all around him", and he plays "music from the heart, emptying his mind letting his creative passion to pass through." I see it and I feel it. He's truly a one-man band with his rhythmic, percussive style using every part of his guitar to make you feel where he's coming from. Adrian Bellue is such an interesting artist to me because there is so much depth to him. He's a reformed death metal guitarist, and I totally get that from the swagger expressed in his playing posture and tattoos. Plus, heavy metal and rock stems from art music. Go listen to some of Antonio Vivaldi's work. You'll see. LOVE strings. Adrian Bellue plays his Alvarez Baritone guitar with such discipline and peace that he's drawn from the fundamentals of martial arts. This dude is thee coolest. Adrian Bellue committed to his musical journey in 2012, and he is now making strides down this indie path with guitar in hand. "Draw Inspiration" is his full length, debut album released March 3, 2013 on iTunes and many other popular digital retailers. You will find below his latest video release and single, "Hookshot" from his forthcoming album Acoustic Discipline. You will also find "Inner Space", which was my introduction to this true, raw talent. Music always finds me when I need it the most. Get to know Adrian Bellue a bit more and click on over to Why It Matters to read his recent interview. Here are a few links to connect with and support Adrian Bellue: Website, Facebook, Soundcloud, YouTube. See, I made it easy for you.

Playlist: Hip Hop Ain't Dead...It's On Really Not Radio! 02.18.13

"Hip Hop Ain't Dead...It's On Really Not Radio!" is a long overdue show that highlights the emcee, the lyricist, the storyteller. The songs will provoke thought, have crazy concepts, word play and will bring social awareness about what's going on in our communities. Most significantly it will build you up as a person and promotes self-love. This is the Hip Hop I was fortunate enough to grow up listening to compared to what they play on mainstream radio today. Here at Really Not Radio℠ we believe in giving you options, and let me just say this playlist is loaded with OPTIONS! I love HIP HOP!

Audio: Listen Up! The Audible Doctor

The name audible doctor hanging from Rosary type beads

Where you find dope Hip Hop beats, you find dope Hip Hop rappers! Enter in The Audible Doctor. This producer gave me life, and inspired me to start a new segment called, "Hip Hop Ain't Dead...It's On Really Not Radio". Oh boy, get ready it's going to be something epic. So, The Audible Doctor is setting the standard and the tone of the first show. I don't know much about The Audible Doctor other than he's totally keeping Hip Hop alive as a doctor should, but when I press Play on any of his music it's an instant flow session. I love when the music creates words, and his music does just that for me #instaFlows. I'm even considering recording something because his music is just that inspiring. I mean I've been going IN during the shower sessions lately ahahahha. I've determined I have a lot to say and get off my chest. So, it's about that time to get in the booth...so to speak. And that's what is so great about Hip Hop, my generation and even the generation before me were blessed enough to be exposed to the Hip Hop we grew up to. Hip Hop has a message, Hip Hop is intelligent, Hip Hop is aware of its surroundings, Hip Hop brings awareness, Hip Hop is a lifestyle, Hip Hop tells a story. I can go on and on, but just know The Audible Doctor gives that good feeling, gives hope and reminds you that there are people out here that are relatable, and actually feel and think about life as you do. They aren't putting you down with every lyric, telling you, you aren't anybody because you are broke or don't possess the latest material trend, or you are a lame because you don't drop bands on your favorite stripper in the club or you ain't fresh because you don't pop the latest designer drug. I say to you, the Hip Hop I grew up with is alive and well. It is here to lift you up and tell you that you are somebody because you are rich and wealthy in knowledge, which is lasting and not temporal. There are people who are aware and intelligent enough to invest their bands that will incur a ROI whether it be into themselves or our communities. There are people who rather lead, than follow everyone who pops molly's and starts sweating or leaning and can't even function and formulate a sentence in a social environment because they're sleep. That DOES NOT sound like the life of the party. I really believe these designer drugs are the new crack that wiped out an entire generation of people in the 80's to destroy a community of people, but hey, what do I know *shoulder shrug*. Okay, let me refocus back on the Music, but lately I've been pondering does "art imitate life" or does "life imitate art"? Whatever the answer, with artists and producers like The Audible Doctor that will be featured on "Hip Hop Ain't Dead...It's On Really Not Radio" will give a different perspective and in hopes change thoughts, that will change actions, which will change the life we live and see in the streets, in the corporate media and/or especially what we hear from our speakers. Wow, this totally went into another direction than I initially planned, but I'm okay with it. Well, alright LOL let's get into the Music, and make sure to support The Audible Doctor on your favorite social networking site. Here's a couple to get you started The Audible Doctor, his Twitter, Soundcloud and Facebook.

Audio: Listen Up! Baauer

Ever since I attended Low End Theory in Los Angeles 2 years ago I  CANNOT get away from this style of music or the performance DJ experience.  If I need something that hypes me up or I want some high-energy music to get me through my workout I turn to Trap Music and/or EDM (Electronic Dance Music). Thee best thing EVER. You have to experience it. I'm not much of a dancer if I go out. You won't get much more than a two-step out of me, but that night at The Airliner I was jumping and moving all over the place ahahaha it was sooo fun! The sub frequencies or the "Low End" just hits so hard, and the progression of how the tracks build up then the beat drops or when you think the beat is going to drop it takes you somewhere else and leaves you on the edge, and just teases you. Well, this is the feeling when listening to Baauer he just takes you on a ride with so many hard, in yo face sounds and phrases that GET YOU HYPE!!! It's masterful chaotic goodness. His style is just sooooo unpredictable and I love that in his music. I actually love that in any genre of music. You have to give a music connoisseur something they didn't expect to keep them interested. There are many Trap, EDM artists on the rise, but Baauer has got my attention. He does this style of music soooo right. He just takes you to a higher elevation. Enough of my babbling get into it! Here is Twitter! SUPPORT SUPPORT SUPPORT!

Audio: Listen Up! Chase Moore - "Shaken Not Stirred"

Famous James Bond theme

As soon as I saw this pop up in my News Feed from Chuck T. I knew Chase Moore's "Shaken Not Stirred", A Beat Tape of 007 Flips, was going to be worth listening to. Pretty much anything from Hippie Sabotage is solid. Plus, I just love when producers have intriguing concept albums, and flip captivating samples to allow us to rediscover a classic phrase or sound. They tell us their story, a different interpretation always makes for a good feeling. Chase Moore did a great job with this capturing the classic feel of the great Bond themes with vintage hip hop undertones. I mean come on James Bond, nobody is touching the smooth Sean Connery Bond. I was also drawn to this because my family is made up of two major James Bond enthusiasts. For example, this past Thanksgiving we had Vesper martini's, and hanging in my parents home are framed pieces of scenes from a few of the Bond films. Goldfinnggggaaaa lol. I really hope you enjoy this. It's beyond dope. Make sure to link with Chase Moore on his Twitter page to stay in contact with him, and support his projects!

Live Performance: KCRW presents Jose James - Apogee's Berkeley St. Studios

man clapping with New York Fitted Cap on in front on stage

The latter part of 2012, within a two month period, I had the opportunity to attend two, count 'em, two Jose James show experiences. The first show was in October at the legendary Royce Hall on the UCLA campus where he and Taylor McFerrin opened up for the Robert Glasper Experiment. The show was super dope, and I began to fall in love with his tone. He gives me hints of Al Jarreau, but he truly has his own unique vocal instrument. Not to mention he brings hip hop flavor to the jazz world with his New York fitted caps on tilt and black leather jacket ensemble, but creates music that makes the jazz greats proud. However, you can't put labels on Jose James because he crosses and blends many genres together to create Music, which makes him a perfect fit here on Really Not Radio. The next show I caught was an intimate show presented by KCRW at the Apogee Berkeley St. Studios in Santa Monica, CA. This show definitely reinforced what I already believed about Jose James, but had the chance to get to know a bit more about the man behind the Music from the interview below with KCRW's Tom Schnabel. This was such a great show to experience because it just felt so right. His band mates were so on point, and are top notch. There's nothing better than hearing the vibrations of real instruments. *chills*. Jose James is currently on tour, and his latest album just released 1/18/13 called "No Beginning No End". Purchase it here from iTunes. Here are his digits, well you get what I mean Twitter, Instagram, Soundcloud and YouTube.

Audio & Video: Listen Up! Joanna Borromeo 'Through The Dark'

stylish girl looking out window

When an outstanding musician, better yet a drummer, tells you to check out an artist trust they just dropped a musical gem on you! Super big shout out to Mathew Smith-Gentry for putting me up on Joanna Borromeo a jazzy R&B, Soul singer/songwriter, keyboardist from Calgary, Canada. I also have to mention she shares her love and passion for music through different workshops, which I just love. Okay, now back to the Music. It's always a promising sign when the first song grabs you and immediately makes you want to two-step and do that cute little dance groove move thingy....okay, well maybe that's just me...you know you are in-store for something special. The last couple of days I haven't been able to getaway from her "Through The Dark" debut EP. It is such a great collection of music. The musicality, her soulful vocal instrument and the album recording is so in your face and so sonically pleasing as well (being an engineer I ALWAYS pay attention to the recording and the mix). After checking Joanna Borromeo out a bit more her musical influences are Motown, Golden-Era Hip-Hop, Contemporary Gospel, 80's R&B/Funk and New Jack Swing. Hello can we say mad crazy awesomeness right there?!?! LOL haaaa. I just had a moment, but let me just say I felt all of those aforementioned musical elements throughout this project. Oh, and a bit of Rock on the record "Save My Soul". His some more good news she will be releasing her second album called, 'Kaleidoscope' February 2013! If you aren't excited yet you will be after you give Joanna Borromeo a listen. As always support the artists by purchasing their albums, following them on your favorite social network and hit up their shows when they are in a city near YOU. Here are a few of her links to get you going Twitter, Reverbnation, YouTube, Facebook and her website.

Audio: Listen Up! Radiorelics

hip black rock band on bus

I'm really starting to appreciate how REALLY good music finds ME! How do I get so lucky I tell ya. The old adage of being in the right place at the right time has never rang more true to me in how I discovered Radiorelics the LA-based rock band! I've been really trying to get more rock on the site, but like any other genre it's out there, but you just have move to where the Music moves you and hopefully you cross paths. I know artists DO NOT like being compared to other artists, but my first impression or thought was okay this is unreal...the lead vocalist is giving me Bootsy Collins/Jimi Hendrix annnnd they are ROCKIN'....reminding me of 90's Metallica!  The 90's are the Golden Era of Music for all genres in my humble opinion, and when bands/artists of today can even get close to that feeling or sound...they got "IT"! Let me tell you I was immediately in LOVE. Oh, wait and it gets better. Soooo, before I even think about featuring a band on Really Not Radio I do what I do and get into the Music, but the ultimate test for me is I always want to catch a show. BAM! They had a show in 2 days, so I made it happen, attended the show and I'm now even more excited about this band. Not only did they sound true to their recordings they perform with great energy and ROCKED the crowd! It was so fun, and they are super cute and seem like really cool dudes ;-) They have a few singles available right now for your listening pleasure, but they will be releasing their debut album this year! Yippee. My initial fav song was, "The Few", but now I can't decide which is my ultimate favorite lol "The Banger" or "Work It Out"???? hmmmm...both songs are equally as bueno. Well, let me introduce you to the band...Malcolm Xavier with the lead vocals, James "Jr. Mafia" Townsend on the drums, Maxx Diaz on bass and Bobby Whiten on guitar. You should read their bio on their Reverbnation site because it's much more entertaining than my straight to the point intro ;-) Okay, enough of my blabbing...As always support Radiorelics on one or all of your favorite social networking sites to stay up on all their happenings! To purchase their singles click on over to their Bandcamp page.
