Music & The People: Snatch Power Artist Collective

As of today, there is only one instance where I can actually say, "art imitates life". Imagine a new, fearless and judgement-free world that defines it's own culture not by what is learned, but what is felt and artistically expressed. A place where you know and accept exactly who you were created to be, and live it to the max in a fantastic, colorful way. Women are phenomenal on their own, but when united with other talented, supportive women great things will be accomplished. Snatch Power is this world.

Snatch Power is a post-apocalyptic, anarchist, afrofuturistic, lgbt, kawaii, feminist artist collective founded in Los Angeles, CA in 2014 by Uhura Moor and Flannery Kennedy. Their desire was to create a sisterhood of artists. They themselves are artists, radio personalities and dancers. The members of Snatch Power are emcees, writers, poets, photographers, musicians, models, designers, songstresses, publicists, etc who are actively flourishing in their crafts. The few Snatch Power events I've been able to attend have always been just what I needed. I want to be impressed, I want all my senses to be stimulated. I find there are so many interesting aspects to life. You will miss out on some exciting experiences if you stay in your little, plain, dull, square, cardboard box. Man, I was bored just typing that. Anywho, you should attend a Snatch Power event if you're in the LA area. I guarantee it will be action-packed with visual arts, dope DJs, burlesque, fashion and of course my favorite live music performances from raw artists on the LA underground music scene. All the while being amongst other chill, down- to-venus people who also enjoy being uniquely themselves.

If you aren't in the Los Angeles area you can get a taste of Snatch Power by listening to SnatchPower Radio on www.radiotitans.com every Thursday night from 9:30-10:30pm PDT. Support all things Snatch and follow the sisterhood on Instagram Twitter.

Beats & Brunch Los Angeles: A Celebration of West Coast Sound

Black vinyl record with an over easy egg on top flyer

On any given day in Los Angeles, CA there's at least 3-5 dope music-centered events to attend. Every blue moon you will come across a concept event like Beats & Brunch LA that creates something to be experienced. Dizon Dreams and The LA Mixer hosted a celebration exploring west coast sound in true Los Angeles fashion with a chic, backyard boogie. The beats selected by DJ Erok carried the vibe allowing people to mix and mingle while enjoying the hip hop inspired brunch menu. At the bar, you could grab tasty cocktail from Robb Roy called Rum D.M.C, Thug Passion or Wu-Tang Forever or menu choices like Eggs Gonna Give It To Ya, breakfast dessert or Craig Mac 'n Cheese curated by Chef Lovely were a nice touch.

As the drinks were flowing and people were connecting awaiting the featured guest panel curated by Brittney Boston of Musicology. Miracle, the violinist/producer/singer/lyricist and aspiring author, commanded our attention with her violin, singing and dancing over the instrumentals for Snoop Dogg & Dr. Dre's "Ain't Nothing But A G Thang" and Ice Cube's "Today Was A Good Day". She further set the tone ushering in a pleasant atmosphere to receive the diverse in thought, and well versed panel of artists and influencers that have been working and making waves on the west coast in music culture and industry for quite some time.

Allow me to introduce Curtiss King, rap artist, producer and engineer who brings a fun, funky, charismatic 90's flavor to everything he creates. He has worked with a variety of high-profile and emerging artists such as: Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, MURS, Hit-Boy, Glasses Malone and Noa James to name several. Chris Alfaro of Free The Robots also shared knowledge with us about the rise of the "collective" from his direct experience with Low End Theory and Soulection. He is signed to Alpha Pup Records and designs psyche, jazz, electronic, hip hop sounds. Ervin "EP" Pope has made at least 5 of your favorite records. No lie. He's worked with Dr. Dre, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Ne-Yo, Janet Jackson and the list goes on for quite awhile. Not only is he your producer's favorite producer, but he's a mentor and the creator of a new platform showcasing emerging talent called, The Art of Hip Hop Live here in Los Angeles. The last panel member was Besidone Amoruwa, She currently works with Revolt TV, and has worked with Aftermath/Interscope, BET, Hidden Beach Recordings and Larrabee Recording Studios. It's safe to say she's an influencer of music culture.

All of those involved with this event from the creators, moderators, panelists, chefs, mixologists and attendees I felt there was an authentic love and support for music. The preservation of the music that has paved the way, and the yearning to be uniquely true to themselves to discover and mold what's next for the west coast sound and music in general. This is a great environment to explore music from various perspectives and I look forward to the next Beats & Brunch LA!

Brokechella: The Complete Artist Experience

Yellow and red flyer with black writing
All photos taken by Fernando Cervantes @bedammedia  for Really Not Radio

This is the 5th year Brokechella has opened its arms to embrace the thriving and diverse arts community of  Los Angeles. Brokechella is a platform where independent creators from the performing to visual arts world unite into one space to share their passion with others. And  there is no greater place to showcase up and coming artists than in the revitalized Arts District of downtown
Los Angeles.

vibrant colors painting on canvasBrokechella is the more affordable music festival alternative to Coachella. The curators of Brokechella may have cut the price, but didn't lose quality when it comes to the featured artists. You may not recognize many names on the line up, but all the acts I witnessed are of a high caliber as you will hear from the playlist below. The uber cool thing about Brokechella is that a majority of the attendees are creatives as well. If you threw a penny you would most definitely hit a musician, producer, DJ, photographer, fashion designer, painter, sculptor, radio/tv personality or comedian. This encouraging, supportive atmosphere was birthed several years ago at coffee shop in Venice, CA, and is still prevalent today. You will hear from the audio below, interviews I had with those I crossed paths with. There was so much love everywhere. People from all walks of life being and expressing exactly who they are and enjoying this interactive adult play land.

DJ playing music with bright show lightsBrokechella consists of four stages. The cARTel Indoor and Outdoor stage, Brownies And Lemonade and Shifty Rhythms stage. Each stage has a different musical experience. Depending on your preference, you can rock out with indie rock bands, dance to the selections of a dope DJ, relax to the sounds of singers and songwriters or have a FUNKin' good time. If you're like me you will bounce around to all the different stages. I LOVE all music deeply, and need variety. However, it's so cool and convenient to be able to stick to one stage to listen to your favorite type of music if  that's how you roll. If you need a break from the music, said nobody ever, but let's say you did. You can explore the "Broke Kingdom" to stimulate your other senses. There is just so much to see and do. It may feel odd at first, but Frank Rozasy encourages you to walk on his art. Lorna Alkana allows you to engage in a form of freestyle art with her. Then, there was visual artist and singer (Jazmin Sisters), Felicia "feliFRESH" Khong, who started and completed a live painting right before your eyes.

Colorful hats displayed on table
The vendors on site had unique merchandise you actually would WANT to buy. Mafmatiks had the fresh to def hats, Caitlin Nicole Jewelry displayed her beautiful vintage and fine pieces, Infinite Expression had handmade custom apparel to rock, and you were able to screen print your own shirt with Skool Boiz. The food choices were plenty. They had everything from Good Greek Grub to the Pudding Truck, and you could even get peanut butter wasted with Spread PB. To wash it all down Lagunitas Brewing Company provided the yummy beer. While you're chomping and sipping away, buying cool things, hanging with your friends or making new ones you will come across some of the cutest 4-legged friends. Puppychella was back for the 2nd year, and it's safe to say it's here to stay.
Brindled color dog held by woman

Brokechella covered all the details from a logistics and artistic perspective. It ran like a well-oiled machine. Last year, I was impressed with the experience. This year, it felt like family was all around, and we were just having a good ole time. Truthfully, I'm already anticipating Brokechella 2016. Long live the "Broke Kingdom".

Please enjoy the sights and sounds of Brokechella from the picture gallery, music playlist and interviews below.

Really Not Radio Conversations InPlaces With Chelsea Monet

You may catch Chelsea Monet in D-town or the Bay, but for now you will find her performing all over LA. She is an MC, singer, songwriter and performing artist that is truly a no label, can't place in a box type of artist. So, she fits in perfectly here on Really Not Radio. We recently got together on the corner of 7th & Fig (Figueroa) in downtown Los Angeles to have a conversation about all things Chelsea Monet.

She currently performs with a few bands and is affiliated with several factors in the underground, LA music scene. Chelsea Monet, when performing as herself, you will get a taste of that real, lyrical hip hop flavor saturated with a message that uplifts and brings awareness to many social injustices of today. Tha Next Monet, an electronic-duo where she brings the flow over her band-mate Elliot's electric bass-hop sounds. Then, there is Courtney C where she is on the vocals, of course, Edgar on guitar and Mike on drums. They're giving you something more along the lines of rockin' good vibes. I mentioned previously that you will find her on stage at least 3 times per week somewhere in LA. You must catch a show because she is so charismatic in general, but when she performs her energy is unmatched by most, and she completely engages the audience. The underground scene is alive and kicking in Los Angeles, CA as she explains further during our interview touching on Uptown, Snatch Power, Bananas, The Ubiquitous Love Tribe, Radio Titans and so  much  more!

Not only will you be able to get to know more
about Chelsea Monet, the underground LA music scene and life as an indie artist, but she dropped off some of  her fav music selections for your listening pleasure. She gave me a nice challenge of arranging her eclectic song choices, but I made it happen. I mean...that's what I do haaaa.  SO fun!

Make sure you connect with Chelsea Monet on your favorite social network. Support her MUSIC, watch her videos and attending a show should absolutely be on your bucket list. I'm just saying. You will find her current projects here: Chelsea Monet "Self Help Raps", Tha Next Monet "The Bamboo EP" Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook

Really Not Radio Conversations InPlaces With Jessica Jolia

Hey my beautiful people! What a wonderful day to hit the beach and hangout, and that's just what I did with recording artist, songwriter, educator and just all around dope person Jessica Jolia. We spent some time discussing all things music in Manhattan Beach, which is one of my favorite places in Los Angeles, CA. Surrounded by the vibe of beach life, good music and good people set the stage for a real cool conversation.

Jessica Jolia is currently on tour with Eric Benet, her song "Sometimes", which you can download on iTunes, is a part of the movie "Sister Code" starring Amber Rose, Eva Marcille and Drew Sidora set to release this year. Her debut studio album, "Watercolors" is scheduled to release
this month, and of course it will be featured here on Really Not Radio. I personally can't wait because it's going to be a welcomed addition to my arsenal of timeless albums that will make an impact on the state of today's music.

Jessica Jolia isn't just a recording artist, but a true entertainer at heart. Her talent and passion to perform whether completely engaging the audience while singing on stage, or acting out by being witty and humorous uplifts everyone's spirit she comes in contact with. She is such a down to earth and genuine person, which is hard to find in artists these days. I fall in love with the music then meet the artist, and wish that interaction never even happened. Real talk. Well, I won't keep you much longer and free you to get into our conversation below. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention. Not only will you be hearing what's going on with Ms. Jolia, but every song you hear on this show was hand-picked by her, which is a fun treat to know what moves her.

Per usual,  here on Really Not Radio, remember  to support independent artists by purchasing their music online, connect with them on your favorite social network and attend their live shows when they're in a city near YOU. Here are some links to connect and to stay in the loop with all things Jessica Jolia! iTunes Instagram Facebook Twitter

Listen Up! Adrian Marcel "Fifty Shades of Adrian: Unplugged"

I haven't read the "Fifty Shades" trilogy nor have I seen the movie that released today, but after listening to Adrian Marcel's "Fifty Shades of Adrian: Unplugged" it mos def has sparked my interest. Adrian Marcel hasn't failed me yet, and this 6-song, acoustic project has me yearning for more per usual. His "7 Days of Weak" album was one of Really Not Radio's best albums of 2013, and AM's "Weak After Next" album had many songs that made several Really Not Radio shows in 2014. So, now it's 2015 and I love the versatility he's bringing to his catalog. He's showing off the greatness of his God-given, vocal instrument. It's perfect, just a man and his guitar is all that's needed. However, I'm curious to know who played on the track. I will totally be blown away if it turns out Adrian can also strum his way to our hearts. Oh boy, a girl can dream, can't she?!? "My Life" is one of my favorite songs of all time, and this acoustic version will have you READY haaa along with "Coming Over" and "Put You Out".

Yessszzz, HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY you guys enjoy the day of LOVE. Everyone has someone to love, but if you feel that you don't remember to love yourself, value yourself, invest in yourself and shower yourself with love and make sure you have "Fifty Shades of Adrian: Unplugged" close by! LOVE. Support Adrian Marcel and link with him on your favorite social network! Website Twitter Instagram Facebook Soundcloud

Listen Up! King avriel "thesis"

album cover palm trees line a road with a podium in the street

I'm overwhelmed by this moment because it's FINALLY happening. King avriel released "thesis" in the summer of 2014, and I'm now able to share it with you. Before she dropped this masterfully, crafted album she satisfied us with several promising singles, "Prelude" and "Failed Messiah". These songs were both instant, life-changing favorites for me, but they weren't included on this album. So, you have to make sure you press play on those as well.

Imagine for a moment what happens when you combine a student who has excelled at every level of her academic career who recently graduated summa cum laude from UCLA on a full ride scholarship. Possessing looks to kill that landed her several acting and modeling gigs, which exposed her to the fast life of Los Angeles, CA. The last point alone would make you a beast, but to also achieve the many accolades she has as a researcher and scholar to being a published poet and multi-instrument musician. One would assume her life was cake and she would naturally have every aspect of life all figured out, right? She gave us so much to consume from the musical content and the accompanying e-booklet that shares the lyrics and a case study highlighting her creative writing skills. A couple profound statements worth noting from the e-book sheds light on her wisdom at such a young age is as follows:

"The more I learn, the more I know, that I know nothing about this world."

"We really know nothing even when we think we have it all figured out. Truth is elusive                        and constantly evolving. Art is a way to capture a still image of the truth in an attempt to                    archive it as it once appeared."

As you will hear from listening to this project that King avriel has a life full of experience by such a young age, and most people would have been ruined and give up. Not saying she is without scars, but she knows how to channel her struggle into art for the betterment of society. King avriel is a world influencer and game changer when it comes to life, and especially to the current state of music. "thesis" is ahead of its time, it's brilliant and will trail blaze the way for thoughtful, insightful, in-touch, real life music. Her sound, the production, the sonics and the presentation sets "thesis" in the upper echelon of epic albums.

When I listen to an album I immediately envision the artist's live performance, how it would come across to the audience, and what venue would showcase their talent best. Unfortunately, I couldn't immediately see King avriel playing at a music venue around town. I saw her music being brought to life on Broadway. It's rich in crisis and relationships, which always plays out well in the theatre. Not only does she have Grammy's (not just her pup) in her future, but Tony's and even Oscar awards. This album is so exciting. She's currently traveling the world, and I think another cultured music experience is on the way. I can't wait to feel how she's evolved as an artist. On that note let me hush and allow you to experience greatness. Make sure to support independent artists by pressing play on their music, downloading their music, following them on your favorite social network and of course catch their shows when they come to a town near YOU! King avriel's connects: Twitter, Tumblr, Soundcloud, Instagram

As you listen to the album let the e-booklet be your guide. It will make it that much better. I promise ;-) "thesis" e-booklet

Listen Up! SIR "Seven Sundays"

To have a moniker like SIR you are commanding respect from your listeners from the start. Inglewood, CA's own SIR drops his soulfully-hip, "Seven Sundays" EP, which is a preview of his forthcoming release this year, will make you pay attention. He could sing yabba dabba do and make it sound fresh and sensual with his swift, playful, harmonic vocals over sick drums, keys and strings. The production throughout this project had a nice balance of a live band feel with touches of electronic patterns and accents. If this project had no lyrics, the music by itself would speak volumes. It wraps you up, holds you tight and takes you to several stimulating places. As great as this sounds, trust me, you WANT the lyrics. They paint vivid scenarios with his artistic, poetic choice of words.

I listened to this album many times, and it made me wish I was in the studio during the recording of this project just to experience the goodness first-hand. His vocal performance is so passionate, penetrating and genuine. He touches on all the best and unfortunate realities of love and life, which makes "Seven Sundays" so easy to fall in love with. His song "Love You" makes you want and believe in love all over again. It just felt like pure love without ulterior motives. Wooooh, good shhhh bro. SIR's music is so dope I had to put him on the Really Not Radio Show: Best of 2014!

Before I get out of here I have to mention he is surrounded by greats. Some of the most talented artists based in Los Angeles, CA in my humble opinion. I peeped this while attending his live show last month when he was the featured artist for the last Soulection show at The Echoplex. One of his background singers was Tiffany Gouche who I've been following for quite some time who's an amazing singer/songwriter and producer. SIR also received some major assists on "Seven Sundays" from super-dope all around entertainer Mr. Anderson Paak, and newbies to ME artist Fat Ron and D Smoke.

Okay, per usual, support indie artists by following them on your favorite social network, buy and/or download their music and attend their shows when they are in a city near YOU! SIR'S Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Soundcloud

Listen Up! Lyfe Harris "Ten" EP

I'm completely drawn to Lyfe Harris' "Ten" EP. It's sound, the promising talent featured and the fact that he's completely raw in expressing himself has been tugging at me to share. I was first introduced to Lyfe Harris from his production work on Chicago-based singer, Njomza's song called "Hold On". The frank, heart-to-heart lyrics supported by Lyfe's somber sound shaped by some of my favorite processing effects completely resonated with me. It made me a believer and I wanted to hear more of the story. Then, shortly after, "Ten" was released.

"Ten" continues to tell a story that touches on love, coping mechanisms to pain due to questionable relationships, the pressure of success and status as well as self-discovery. He collaborated with a couple up and coming Oakland, CA artists that are buzzing big time this year. Jane Handcock, an amazing songwriter for Adrian Marcel contributed to the success of his "7 Days of Weak" album, which was one of my favorites of 2013. I wasn't aware that she sang until I heard her rule Drake and James Fauntleroy's "Girls Love Beyonce" track on Adrian Marcel's latest release "Weak After Next". Kehlani, a seasoned 19 year old R&B singer, storyteller who is wise beyond her years. She was a part of the annual CMJ Music Marathon in New York, and featured as one of Billboard's emerging artist this past October. She recently dropped her first solo project, "Cloud 19" that's refreshing and light. Lyfe Harris also worked with a collection of producers on this project that brought the feels too. These young stars are twinkling bright right now, but I foresee an even brighter future as they evolve. All parties involved on this project have a strong passion for music, and they know just how to convey it to us. Real artists are alive and well, and you can always find that here on Really Not Radio. Good stuff. As usual make sure to support and keep up with Lyfe Harris (Twitter, Soundcloud, Bandcamp,Website) by purchasing, downloading, sharing and attending his shows. Peace. STANDOUT TRACKS: "Supply You", "Glass House", "Always Been", "Expensive", "Stuck" "On You", "Understand Me"

Listen Up! Anderson .Paak's Debut Album "Venice"

A collage of pictures of people in Venice CA

This morning I received a reminder alert on my iPhone that duh duh duuuuh,...Anderson .Paak's debut album "Venice", released by Steel Wool, is arriving today. Yes, this was alert worthy. If you've been tuned in to Really Not Radio you would understand the seriousness of this album for me. I believed Anderson .Paak would be declared my 'album of the year', and he's currently holding 1st place. Ayyye you in first place. I feel somewhat attached to this album title because this past birthday I biked from Santa Monica to Marina Del Rey and spent some time off in Venice. This allowed me to see how badass Venice is. The culture is like none other. "It’s one of the showplaces of good old American self-expression. Here, you do your thing and the world watches." The above excerpt is from the 1978 documentary, "Skateboard Kings", which was included on Paak's song "Dogtown". It captures the essence of Venice quite well.

It all makes sense to me now. The naturally sexy, bad boy persona I experienced at Anderson Paak's live performance this past July, at The Lyric Theater, was no front. He's been walking the same Venice streets where many of the first, "be yourself, dance to your own beat" creators settled and rebelled in Los Angeles, California. You can feel and hear the lifestyle throughout this album. Being familiar with Paak's artistry I knew anything could happen once I pressed play. He gives you a collection of work that keeps and leaves you interested. From his intricate story-telling with rhythmic delivery, telling you like it is point-blank period, commands your attention. He continues to paint an abstract picture by collaborating with heavy producers like Ta-Ku, Tokimonsta and rising stars Mikos Da Gawd, Lo Def and DK. Dropping funky-trap, rebel-soul, future r&b,UK jam-rockish type sounds that you would find playing at speakeasy's scattered throughout Venice.

Currently, my favorite jams are "Might Be" and "Milk and Honey" because of the alluring lyrics and detailed storytelling, which makes me a believer in all things .Paak. Mmmhmm. Oh, and "Miss Right" is also a current anthem. Before this album dropped "Drugs" and "Maps" were like water and wi-fi. I needed them all day. And I think my future favorites will be "Luh You", "Already" and "Right There". Ya, pretty much the whole album haaaa. Gotta LOVE it!

Make sure to connect and support Anderson .Paak by purchasing his album on iTunes and join his social networks (Twitter, Instagram, YouTube. The numbers mean everything to artists people! SUPPORT SUPPOORRRT.

Anderson .Paak's live performance is stellar. I shared my show experience from his month long residency at The Lyric Theatre in Los Angeles here.

Press play...
