Audio & Interview: Shine On! Bruce Stevens - The Progression II

Hand reaching down from Heaven

I don't know what it is about artists that come out the Midwest, but they have sooo much substance. I mean just think about it Kanye West, J Dilla, Lupe Fiasco, Common to name a few, but I mean the list goes on and on lol. Bruce Stevens is definitely keeping this trend alive hailing from Detroit, Michigan. If Lupe Fiasco leaves the rap game as he hinted to recently. We have up-and-comers like Bruce Stevens who will carry on the necessary thought-provoking, uplifting message that needs to be heard during these seemingly dark and trying times. Bruce Stevens album, "The Progression II", gives hope and encouragement while talking about the trials and tribulations that we all face on a daily basis. 'The Progression II' is such a thoughtful project from the production selected, to the Lauryn Hill interludes placed throughout the album to the intelligent lyrics to the visual presentation. This is truly a brillant work for the BSD (Brillance Stays Driven) camp. Not only is Bruce Stevens a masterful emcee, but he is an illustrator/animator where his  images seem to have a spirit and soul of their own that speaks volumes. You will have to click on over to his website www.iambrucestevens.com to check out his Brillance Stays Driven t-shirts, his living artwork and more of his music. As usual press play and get into his latest project, "The Progression II" below as well as enjoy the conversation we shared below to get into the mind of Bruce Stevens a bit more!

press Play...

Really Not Radio: So who is Bruce Stevens?

Bruce Stevens: Bruce Stevens is another side of me, basically the result of seeing life as moving animation... He's the cartoon animated version of myself lol

RNR: Who and what is TeamBSD (Brillance Stays Driven)?

Bruce Stevens: BSD is a squad of very talented focused individuals from Detroit and Los Angeles, PhazzeOne, Ethan Michael, ELO and the homie Flash  ... TeamBSD is our support system the people who represent our music & help spread our brand.

RNR: The Progression album marks a period of your life where you began focusing on recording and writing, and you share with us your growth as a man and artist. Now with the recent release of The Progression II what can we expect from this project?

Bruce Stevens: This project is basically a step up more "progress" lol with recording and the writing is more song driven instead of just spazzing out on records.

RNR: What are you progressing towards?

Bruce Stevens: I am progressing toward the real life, I had a lot of time over the years to meditate on life and it just doesn't seem like majority of us are livin' it right. It's like we live how somebody with more money than us dictates our experience, I just never thought that was real I mean money does make a way to do anything in "this world" but I can't see us being put here to chase paper all day just to survive. So I'm progressing into a more complete man and a true instrument of our creator.

RNR: You are wise beyond your years from the knowledge you drop through your lyrics. Where did you get all this game? lol

Bruce Stevens: haha I appreciate that.. My Dad is one of the biggest inspirations of my life. He raised me with bible principals and was big on having common sense. Using your mind and your heart as tools that work together instead of just moving off the emotion of the heart. He taught me to see no limits in what I could learn & to always strive for greatness or brilliance. We (as humans) come from a brilliant source and the only way to see the potential of that source is to tap into it's energy. When I write I just aim to tap into that energy.

RNR: What inspires you to do what you do?

Bruce Stevens: Life really inspires me.. there's so much goin on around us that so many people don't understand or even notice. My poetry comes from a place where I wanna be able to drop jewels but still entertain people since most of us have short attention spans and don't really see a lot of positive outlets when we on the bottom. I'm inspired by art of course & women especially lol It's always interesting to see what a woman can inspire me to write just by our interaction. Every moment is a story a picture waiting to be documented so I document life while using the power of music to influence the future outcome in a brighter light.

RNR: What are your musical influences?
Bruce Stevens: Mann I got a lot i'd definitely have to say Lauryn Hill touched me in a way I never thought I could connect to music. The way she paints her messages of love and most people wouldn't even notice how much influence the most high had/has on her music. When I heard The Miseducation I knew I had to make music to keep that feeling alive. Em and Kanye have also been influential to my sound being from the Midwest they were easy to relate to along wit Royce and Elzhi which to me is one of the most underrated emcees.

RNR: Yessss, I love Lauryn Hill too. If I had to pick she's one of my fav artist if not my number 1. What's your creative process as far as devloping your songs? Do you have a song idea first or do you write to the music?

Bruce Stevens: It depends with me, most of the time I get lyrics in rushes.. It just comes whether I just happen to see or read something that triggers my mind I can be listening to a new song and not even hear the artist on it and begin writing in my head. For the most part I go off my feeling when I hear something the more it vibes with my spirit the quicker the song is done.. If I feel like i'm looking for lyrics or things to say then I prolly just don't like the beat lol

RNR: ahaha right! The beat definitely speaks if it's a good one that you can connect with. You are a very gifted individual. You create music, you are an illustrator and the creator of your own clothing line. What age did you start discovering your talents and which one did you tackle first?

Bruce Stevens: Thank you.. I started drawing around the age of six. Art definitely was my first love when it comes to everything that I branched into. It is just something about creating an illustration that intrigues me.. I guess it always puts me in a place where I think about how our planet was designed and how thought out the science of our bodies are, and how we work. It's like getting a small glimpse of the mindset of something way more advanced and genius, i'd rather chase that over money any day.

RNR: Before I move on is there any other talents you care to share? lol

Bruce Stevens: haha other than poetry/rap, illustration, and fashion ... I would have to say i'ma good friend. I know to some that may not seem like a talent but in my eye's having somebody who understands love and it's purpose knows how to treat the one's close to them. Sooo I think i'm pretty good at that too lol

RNR: I have my hands in a few baskets as well, but how do you feel about the old adage, "jack of all trades, a master of none"?

Bruce Stevens: I feel like that's just an excuse for somebody who can't do it all lol syke nah It's hint of truth in that but these days relying on others is hard and you'll waste more time searching for others to master things you may be able to handle. I think the best way to show your full range as an artist is to have the vision and build the blueprint but then be humble and smart enough to let others who are masters at some of the trades you may be lacking in, to assist. Over time you'll attract the people you need to take over the things you'd rather not tackle.

RNR: How do you balance everything?

Bruce Stevens: I don't know, I just usually write a list of things to do for the day and take it one by one based off relevance and just go in. I used to spend a lot of time thinking and over-thinking now I just get it in and go with what feels right. My right hand man PhazzeOne is also crazy talented he produces, helps with technical things sets up shows and all that so he takes a lot off my shoulders. My brother Ethan back home in Detroit is also a big part of the team coming thru with straight up brilliant art work and basically finishes up concepts I can't get to. His spit game AND production game is stoOpid too.. I just wish he still lived out here.

RNR: Where do you see Bruce Stevens next year around this time?

Bruce Stevens: Next year around this time I see my team making major moves if we're not knocking down mainstream barriers on our independent grind we'll definitely be visible on the web. We have a lot of great material just waiting on the right time to release and coming up with the right presentation.. I see us all being in a good place. There has been a lot of ups and downs some major dips and as long as we focus on the goal there ain't nothing that can change where we're headed. At the end of the day I just want to grow with my audience and get my music to the world, like I wouldn't mind being overseas next year.

RNR: What's next for Bruce Stevens and please include upcoming shows and appearances. Please also share with us the best way to keep up with all of your moves.

Bruce Stevens: Well I been doing a lot of shows in dtla so i'll definitely keep that up @ spots like The Nirvana Bar etc. .  I don't know what venue we gonna do next but Nirvana been showing a lot of love so Im'a be there at least once a month but the best way to keep up with me is my twitter @IamBruceStevens and my facebook page.

Thank youuuu!

; ) out chere..

RNR: No, THANK YOU! Really Not Radio wishes you the best, and look forward to seeing and hearing more of the brillance.

Audio & Interview: Shine On! Vintage Nation

woman and man holding acoustic guitars

Vintage Nation is a band full of talented musicians out of Atlanta, GA who, mark my words, will make their mark in this here music game. They have the determination, the talent and the right heart to achieve all of their dreams. When I first came across Vintage Nation I was drawn to their passion and the feeling that radiates from their music through the message and each strum of the guitar. I discovered Vintage Nation from a contest ONEMusic Fest held for the Atlanta, GA show. Let me just say their raw talent blew me AWAY, and I've been hooked ever since. I can never quite figure out what draws me to certain artists, but I just know it when I hear it, and Vintage Nation has got that "IT" factor working in their favor all day. They are currently working on an EP and other visuals for your viewing pleasure, so make sure to show your support by keeping up with all things Vintage Nation by linking up with them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as well as purchasing the catchy, witty song that poses the question, "What do heroes do when they are brokenhearted?". Great question and genius concept. Purchase the single "Brokenhearted Hero" right here. SUPPORT THAT REAL GOOD, FEEL GOOD MUSIC! Please get to know a bit more about Vintage Nation from the conversation we had below. They are good people AND they make great music. Really Not Radio: I read the story of how Vintage Nation formed, and performed the same day. How much of fate do you think came into play for the creation of Vintage Nation?

Vintage Nation Ink: I believe it was meant to happen the exact way it did! I don't believe in coincidences, its all about divine timing and i know it definitely played a major part in the creation of the VN.

Vintage Nation Jow: I knew it was fate when it happened bc i knew i was opening a new chapter in my life, for what may be later success.

RNR: What's behind the name or significance of Vintage Nation?

VN: The name is just classic and represents us as what some  people may call "old souls", it's like we all hopped in a time machine and were made to create music. Its a beautiful thing. It represents Family           and a tight unit of creative folk preserving the cool, soul and love.

RNR: Yes, Vintage Nation does give that good feelin'. Vintage Nation has performed everywhere from parking garages to Occupy ATL to venues. Where has your most meaningful performance been to-date?

VN: We would say when we performed at the Troy Davis Rally. It was an energy that we will never forget. We started at the capitol then marched downtown throughout the city, it was impact-full and it was unity and love and so much love as we all stood in solidarity with our brother Troy Davis. It was a true moment of a live soundtrack to the streets. just like every other day, but this event was one of national concern. When it comes to our community we are def. involved and right there hands on. / guitars on too

RNR: Amen. I know, I bet that was a touching moment. Is Vintage Nation just Ink & Jow or are their others who support your sound?

VN: You know when we started this journey we had a vision of more than the two of us, just like a tribe of creators who are incredibly talented, and we are a family, there is definitely more to VN than INk & Jow...Also in the VN is Keeyen an amazing musician, Philip Michael, awesome guitarist vocalist, JT is our amazing drummer, Talent is a spoken word lyricist, Its a nation of amazing artist and as we evolve you will continue to know and love the members of the VN. Its so much bigger than the 2 of us. At any given moment at a live show you may see 1 of us to  6 of us. That's the beauty of it.

RNR: That is a beautiful thing, I mos def feel the energy and look forward to hearing and seeing more from the VN. I'm excited cuz I know it is going to be great and change lives and VN will make a mark in this here world through MUSIC! What instruments do you play?

VN: We all play guitar!!! And keys, and vocals....our latest toy is the harp!

RNR: Whaaaaat, can't wait to hear the harp incorporated into your sound. I'm a big fan of strings. At what moment did it click that you wanted to pursue music?

VN Jow: The time i went home to see my grandfather in the nursing home and I played my instrument and i knew i had to do it seriously from then on, that was about 3 months ago....and since then Ive been rolling and never looked back.

VN Ink: For me i knew as a kid, early on, esp after i realized i wasn't going to the wnba lol, it really clicked but i always knew i wanted to do music and would not be happy doing anything else. it was like a calling from Jah. and I have to fulfill that gift. can't stop.

RNR: Can't stop, won't stop. I love how you two have committed to your purpose, and won't look back. What's Vintage Nation's ultimate goal or overall message with creating and sharing your Music?

VN: Our goal is simple. To love as many as we can, as long as we can, as well as we can. To inspire and help people while using our gifts. Its all about love. We want to share our love for music like God has shown us his love for us. and with that being said we will be probably sharing music with the world until we die.

RNR: YES! I LOVE IT! What do you enjoy most vibing out, and just letting the Music move or penning and planning your songs?
VN: lol hahaha....Thats easy!! We love vibing out and letting the music take control. It's nothing forced about the way we work and feel our craft. The music always speaks louder than any directions given!!! Its the best process ever, we feel we can really be ourselves and the music does the rest. its pretty cool.

RNR: Music to me is very spiritual, yes I take it that serious. It's a healer and a leader and soooo many other things. It's so cool to meet others who understand the feeling aspect of Music. What are your passions other than music?

VN: Ummmm, mainly Art!!! God, Traveling, Cooking....cooking is so cathartic for us lol. Golfing, Sports. & Film making.

RNR: Sounds like lots of fun and good food is being enjoyed LOL. Blessings all around. What inspires you to keep pushing towards your desires?

VN: Life, the struggle and really our families. and the people who tell us to never stop, we meet sooo many people along our journey who always tells us no matter what to never stop. that really helps knowing that your music helps people get through hard times.

RNR: Yep, you guys understand this life. It's full of struggle, but you just have to keep pushing and knowing that you are living your purpose God will work out all the details of giving you your hearts desires. At night when you reflect on your day what makes you say "today was a good day"?

VN Jow: laughing! everyday im alive really, ink jokes. Everyday i accomplish a planned goal.

VN Ink: I think everyday im able to meet people, or connect with society in some form of way, its been a good day. anytime i get that warm and full feeling after a long day of grinding, i know its worth it!

RNR: I love all of your YouTube videos, and the single "Brokenhearted Hero", and I'm looking forward to upcoming projects. So, what next can we expect from Vintage Nation?

VN: Aww thank you soo much! We have a lot planned!! We are working on our EP right now as we speak and have some new songs we are shooting visuals too as well to drop! So much we are working on. We are all super excited!

RNR: Yes, ooooh can't wait for more Vintage Nation. Make sure to send us links as soon as things drop. Lastly, please share how to keep up with all things Vintage Nation, and what show, appearances you have coming up or any shout outs you would like to make.

Audio & Interview: Shine On! Radio Galaxy - We Come In Peace

Atari video games and cosmic theme

There are only a few handfuls of artists within the masses of music creators out here that create their own lane by simply being who they are, and not what they are trying to be. Radio Galaxy is very authentic, believable and I can tell they are having a great time creating together. Their album "We Come In Peace" is such a solid and complete production. This project captures all of the necessary elements to be a timeless, favorite album. You know those default albums that you depend on to get you through whatever, whenever you need the Music to take you there, eventhough, you've already listened to it at least 20 times! Ha, maybe not, maybe that's just me, but I never get tired of this album because the production is on point, and complex enough to keep you interested. The vocals marry well with the production, the content, the message, the feel of "We Come In Peace" will never get old because it plays to all the musical senses for me, and I'm sure it will for you too. Radio Galaxy's sound is made up of Spacebunny Jeffereson on the vocals whether she's singing or rappping and King Midas and DJ Cozmos, the collaborating duo, on the smooth, jazzy, space-driven, hip-hop rhythmic productions who go by the moniker King Coz. I just have to add that I love intros, interludes and outros. It really takes an album from here to there with just a liiiiittle more thought. Too many artists are focused on making a hit song than a solid, epic album. Make sure to enjoy the conversation I had below with Radio Galaxy to get to know them a bit more, and listen...and THEN....PURCHASE "We Come In Peace" below from their bandcamp site to support them. We need more artists like Radio Galaxy in the forefront to lead the way, and show others how to make that real good, feel good Music.

press Play...

Really Not Radio: If Radio Galaxy was in the Webster dictionary how would it be defined?

Radio Galaxy: "It's actually defined there already as a type of galaxy emitting radiation/radio frequencies. lol... so we'll stick with that."

RNR: How and when did Radio Galaxy come together as a group?

Radio Galaxy: "About 3 years ago. Perhaps longer now. King Coz was working on one of H.I.S.D's projects at the time, and Spacebunny Jefferson (who was just a local open mic poet/jazz vocalist named Khimmy J at the time) came in to lend some vocals, lyrics to their project. King reached out to her to see if she needed some tracks for what would have been a solo EP, but after recording 1 of the songs, the chemistry, outright goofiness, and the overall bond between King, Cozmos and Spacebunny was so strong, that the 3 combined to create the force that is now Radio Galaxy." (in our Morgan Freeman narrator voice)

RNR: LOL okay I can dig it. I love hearing how organically groups come together. What's your purpose or overall message of the Music you create?

Radio Galaxy: "Our message is synonymous with the debut album's title: We Come in Peace...We're simply 3 creative creations making "hue-tiful muse-ic".  There's more to it, of course - but we can't divulge the ultimate purpose of our coming. But rest assured all things are revealed in "hue" time."

RNR: Your purpose is being fulfilled because I'm anticipating what's to come. "We Come In Peace" is an extremely solid album. What preparation took place before you hit the record button?

Radio Galaxy: "We prepared for the task at hand by partaking in moon water, corn fritters and a wide assortment of treats from Whole Foods - courtesy of Coz's (aka Snack-Man) bottomless brown bag. He's our Santa. We also chatted for hours on-end about various unrelated topics, Spacebunny watched Sci-Fi films before coming to the studio and secretly meditated for a few minutes in the bathroom when she got there, King watched 70's Blaxxploitation films, we drew on the RG Wall of Randomness with sharpies, and we laughed...Then, we eventually hit the record button when everyone was happy and in only a few takes - viola! Heats."

RNR: Yeah, I figured it was something like that ha! What other passions do you have other than creating dope Music?

Radio Galaxy: "Life......(awkward silence). We're pretty passionate about that...and art and stuff."

RNR: What are your musical influences collectively and individually?

Radio Galaxy: "Collectively and in some ways individually we are influenced by artists like Prince, Marvin Gaye, Radiohead, Stereolab, Dilla, Sade, Bjork, Nirvana, Jimi Hendrix and too many others to name. Ultimately, we're just influenced by good music and the people who are audacious enough to defy convention to create it. Period."

RNR: Yeah, I gravitate towards forward thinkers, outside the boxers, but inside their own box without sides and boundaries. Now many of your songs are written in parables to me, and I'm enjoying decoding and breaking the lyrics down. Spacebunny Jefferson where do you draw inspiration from when writing lyrics?

Spacebunny: "Life's been a roller coaster as well as the ultimate classroom for me. So those experiences coupled with the fact that I've always been an awkward, uber observant, people watching, meditating fool who's forever looking up at the stars and clumsily tripping over things along my path is the origin of my inspiration and writing style."

RNR: You're awesome for recognizing that everything we experience in life whether bad or good shapes us. In your own word's what's a "Feel Trip"?

Spacebunny: "A feel trip's a journey through your own emotions. The initial attraction. The confusion. The sweaty palms. The "okay, so what now?". The "He loves me. He loves me not." The urge to run. All of the beautiful bullshit that falling in love entails...That's a Feel Trip."

RNR: okkaaaaaay. You took the words right out of my mouth. Love is truly a 'Feel Trip' Spacebunny what setting do you find yourself writing most of the time?

Spacebunny: "Whereverville. What I mean by that is, when the urge strikes, I could be anywhere. Some of these songs were written on napkins, receipts, backs of envelopes; magazines, inside book covers, in my hand...some were doodled on my bathroom mirror with eyeliner because I didn't want to tear the house apart searching for a pen/pad and risk losing a single thought."

RNR: I can totally relate. I truly dislike when a thought escapes me. I'm going to have to keep my eyeliner close ;-) Spacebunny, do you enjoy singing or rapping most?

Spacebunny: "I enjoy both equally, but oddly enough I don't consider myself either one. I'm more so just a creative vessel. If the message chooses to come out via singing, rapping, poetry, writing, painting, doodling, etc. . . I let it flow. I'm open to it all."

RNR: That makes total sense! Now, King Coz your production keeps me very interested and never bored. Your sound fits perfectly and seamlessly with this project. How does it work when collaborating on production? Does one work on drums then the other does melody, etc?

Coz: Sometimes we dropbox ideas. Sometimes we sit in the Gold Room and create right on the spot. It just depends on how one of us is feeling.. If i hear the melody i may start something off and if King Midas feels the rhythm he'll record somthing or we might just put it all together all at the same time.

RNR: Yeah, I hear ya you just have to go with the flow. There's no structure with creativity. From the comedic interludes and YouTube videos it seems like you all are having fun together. What do you hope to accomplish in the next two years?

Radio Galaxy: "We'd like to have grown substantially musically and artistically. In what direction, we're not sure. We're all working to hone our skills even more to improve our individual crafts, so that the collective is strengthened by what we each bring to it. Evolution is everything..."

RNR: That's a good point. If there's no weak links and every component is strong as possible. When individuals come together something powerful will happen. Real quick...Is Hueston the spelling the locals use or is that a Radio Galaxy thing? I've never seen Houston spelled in that way, and I just thought it was cool and unique...ahaha I'm a weirdo, but I'm into sociology and discovering new regional trends.

Radio Galaxy: "Hueston is the spelling that Radio Galaxy and the Peace Uv Mine family and its extended collection of fans/friends uses. Houston has over time become a very diverse place and is currently listed in Forbes as one of the top cities to reside in. Despite the outside perception of what places in Texas are supposedly like...there are various "hues" in Hueston, artistically and otherwise."

RNR: I haven't heard many artists out of Hueston with your sound...What's the music scene like out there?

Radio Galaxy: "It's a melting pot of various styles. We've somehow managed to be oddballs amid all the variety...which wasn't intentional. We just wanted to create a sound that was totally our own without forcing it."

RNR: I need to make a trip out to H-TOWN rather sooner than later. Last question and I'll let you go what's your affiliation with H.I.S.D and Peace Uv Mine Collective?

Radio Galaxy: "Let's just say we're the eclectic kindred of H.I.S.D. and the proverbial wild child of the Peace Uv Mine music family."

RNR: Once again thank you sooo much for sharing with us a bit more about Radio Galaxy. We will all try and stay away from the Scalywagamus' and hang with the Flyceratops! Please let the viewers know the best way to keep in touch of all things Radio Galaxy and of upcoming projects, events, etc.

Audio & Interview: Shine On! Tish

woman with shaved head with hand by ear

Here's a quadruple threat artist that I've been waiting to feature for quite some time now. I've been patiently waiting for an album from Tish, but her life is being maneuvered down another path that is equally as exciting. Tish is a singer, rapper, TV concept writer, publisher and songwriter who was recently signed to Universal Music Publishing Group! When I first heard Tish's voice on the Fallen Star record I was hooked and instantly knew she has IT. Tish has worked and is rocking with some of the best and biggest names in the industry and she's mos def making everyone listen. Tish has put in work to be where she is today and deserves every bit of recognition and success! This is going to be a BIG year for her and I can't wait to hear more from Tish! To get to know Tish a bit better get into the conversation we had below and as always...

press Play...

Really Not Radio: Listen2Tish huh? So, what is it that you want to tell us...We're all ears and ready to listen lol

Tish: Listen2tish Is exactly what I want people to do. I am very creative. I write music , tv show concepts , marketing concepts and i want every one to listen.  I was always an influential person. Hence listen2tish. I want people to listen to everything i have to say.

RNR: Ohhhh kaay I heard that! You are now living in sunny southern california, more specifically, Los Angeles, but you're from New York. If you ask me you've lived in two of the greatest cities in the U.S. How does the music scene compare between the two?

Tish: I am from the BRONX New York but the music scene has moved to LA. While there are still producers in NY, majority of songwriters and producers have moved here. I follow the work. I also LOVE Hollywood And the fact that marijuana is not a drug but a medicine. LOVE THAT.
RNR: Haaaa okay, the perks of living in Cali! You sing wonderfully, rap like a boss and you're a songwriter/publisher. When and how did you get into music?

Tish: My start in singing began at age 6, My mom loved to sing and she shared that love with myself and siblings. I always sang Frankie Lymon and the Teenager's "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" And Dionne Warwicks " that's what friends are for". My sister was more the vocalist at that time which led me to rapping. I learned to rap from my other brother. That was my first choice for many years after. I got into the music business years later.

RNR: Out of the three what do you enjoy the most?

Tish: Ten Years ago I would have said I'll never be a singer just a rapper who wrote songs. Now I can say I love singing. I have been through a lot and it seems when i sing it comes through and people really identify and feel the passion.

RNR: I've been hitting you up for awhile now to see when I can get my ears on an album because the first time I heard that Fallen Star joint I just had to get more! However, I see that you are more focused on songwriting now being signed with Universal Music Publishing Group. Congratulations on that by the way. I guess my question is how did you get to where you are today? Was it hard work, who you know, luck? I know many aspiring songwriters would love to hear your story?

Tish: My story is long but I'll give you the short. That saying it takes TEN years to become an overnight success is very true when it comes to me. It was in no way easy.. It was a long hard walk to this point. I was focused, I loved my music and I really could die at the thought of failure which is why i refuse to fail.

RNR: Yep, the thought of failure would definitely keep you motivated. Is songwriting a gift or do you have to practice and work at it to be great?

Tish: I think songwriting is a bit of both, Gift and practice.
RNR: Where do you find yourself writing most of the time? Is it after a wild night of partying lol a day spent by yourself, in the studio, after a new experience??? I'm curious...

Tish: I write whatever comes to mind and where ever but mostly in the studio.

RNR: How do YOU know when you wrote a hit?

Tish: You never know when you wrote a hit until its a hit. But you can write a song that you know sounds good.

RNR: What keeps you inspired?

Tish: LIFE is my daily source of inspiration. Other peoples lives. As long as i wake up im inspired. Heartbreak helped me a lot.

RNR: Ahhh yes, that good ole heartbreak. Heartbreak begets the best material! What's a typical day like for you?

Tish: Typical Day... Wake up round 12pm ... shower bout 1. Video games ( call of duty) till bout 3:00 then off to the studio from 4 until. wake up do it again.

RNR: Sounds like that GOOD LIFE to me ;-) I know you love good food. What's your favorite spot to eat in LA? In NYC?

Audio & Interview: Shine On! Dread "Crayons" Mixtape

awesome graphic with color crayon as visual

This is such a treat. Dread's Crayons mixtape is artistry at it's finest from the timeless Music to the visuals provided by Dome Apparel: Creative Minds & Grinds. You have to watch the video below on how they created the cover art for Crayons. This project has so much love and creativity behind it. I just know it's going to do really well. Not only is this mixtape hot lava, but all of Dread's past mixtapes found on his Bandcamp site will make you pay attention! Dread is only 21 years of age, but has a lot of wisdom and will definitely be a light to many from his generation and beyond. Well, I'm going to zip it cuz I can go on and on, but before I go 1. Make sure you watch the making of the cover art video 2. Get to know Dread, the man behind the music from the conversation we had below 3. press Play on the Crayons Mixtape below and 4. Be prepared to have a new favorite artist! k bye.

Really Not Radio: Who is Dread? Who is Ayo Beckley?

Dread: Um. Well I am a 21 year old mass communications major that attends Jackson State University. The twist is that I am also a artist, photographer, and director.

RNR: What is Flight League?

Dread: Flight league is my tribe. We are not a label. We are not a company. We are simply just a group of kids who share the same vision but with different artistic talents. Whether it is music, videography, photography, engineering, or production, every thing comes together and transforms into Flight League. This year, after i drop CRAYONS, Imma really focus on my team and their debut projects to introduce the world to. In due time, everyone will understand what flight league is.

RNR:  Well, I'm excited to hear and see more. I see you are from all over the map, but where do you call home?

Dread: I represent alot of places California is my home. I was born in Oakland and I grew up going to school in Berkeley. I learned alot from my hometown. We have such a rich culture out there and people think so radically that growing up in an area like that was an amazing experience.

RNR:  I know Berkley is live. I've checked out all your past releases on your bandcamp page, and I'm really digging your music! You use a lot of fresh, new metaphors that I haven't heard before and I LOVE IT! The word play is nice too...very intelligent flow. What can we expect from your upcoming release "Crayons" on 4/30?

Dread: Expect everything to be turned up times 100. This my first project that i have put out where 90% of the music is all orginal and made from scratch. This is a brand new sound that im about to unleash the world. I tried to push the boundaries of music with this one. I feel like there should be no specific genre when you are making music. Just make whatever your heart feels is right. All that has lead me to this point this point in my life. Im excited.

RNR: You should be. I'm excited about Crayons too it does have a great sound. It's mos def in rotation over here. I also totally agree with you that music is more of a feeling for me as well vs. giving it a specific label. How did you come up or what is the significance behind the title Crayons?

Dread: So the meaning behind crayons is that i am at a young stage of my music. When we were babies the first thing we were able to use to express our art were crayons. Thats where we started from. Thats where i feel i started from. I can only use the basics that have been given to me. I can only color within the black lines. In a year if this project takes off these crayons will turn into paint brushes.

RNR: Hmmm...I love that! So poetic ;-) How do you describe your sound or style? What sets you apart from the rest and makes you...YOU?

Dread: I feel like i am realist. What naturally bonds every human in the world is the will to survive. Thats what brings us all together. Whether you are rich or poor, life is not guaranteed. So that is how I live my life. Thats the picture i want to paint when I make music. Real Feelings, real Observations, and real beliefs. I wouldn't say it sets me apart from any artist because i honestly feel like every artist has their own path. The fans choose what path they wanna join. I just hope that they respect mine.

RNR: What producers have you worked with on your past releases and who will be featured on Crayons?

Dread: Really I stuck with my in house producer since 08. I used alot of industry instrumentals in my previous projects. This project is slightly different. Royal T produced over half of the mixtape but i added a new line of upcoming producers that I feel shouldnt be slept on. Producers like Itzumiaki, and Matt Mcghee are only some of the names. As far as far as features go. I really wanted to feature alot of key people that i feel are at the same level of creativity that i am at right now. I think i have about 9 features on the this tape which is the most I have ever had on a tape. I really dont wanna spoil who's on it . I just want you all to enjoy the collaborations when the tape drops lol.

RNR: Nowadays you have to wear many hats and I see that you are a recording artist, photographer and video director. What came first the microphone or the camera? Briefly, what's your story of evolution up to this point in your endeavors?

Dread: Well ive always been doing music since i was freshman in high school. I took photography course my junior and senior year in high school and instantly fell in love with photography and videography. Music and photography are so simalar and they are both equally powerful. Now im at jackson State university and me being a mass comm major has really filled all the loose screws for me and meshed both the things that I love the most.

RNR: Yes, audio and visual when done right marry very well. Sometimes I don't necessarily like a song until I see the video or vice versa. Who are some of your influences, musically and in general?

Dread: I am naturally just influenced from living life and my familly. They are reason that i think the way I think. A teacher told me this past semester, " If you are not thinking, you are not alive ". That was the realest thing ive heard in a long time. I come from rich roots. My parents exposed me to all types of music at a very young age. From artist like yanni, to sting, to Fela Kuti. Also moving so many places, helped really get a vibe of different sounds in the world. Different cities have different sounds. Its a beautiful thing.

RNR: mmm Hmmm yes it is. I can tell from your music that you are very cultured and have seen a few things with the years you've been thinking and alive. What have you been listening to lately?

Dread: I have been listening to ALOT of Top Dawg Entertainment right now. By far, they are the top dogs in the game right now. I been keeping it real cali these past couple of months. I have alot of Dom Kennedy , IAMSU, and Casey Veggies on my ipod. Gotta pay hometown artist homage and respect because we are all we got. Ace Hood's new mixtape was pretty dope. As far as singers ll i have been listening to these past months is stacy barthe and kevin Cossom. They are also pretty dope.

RNR: Nice...nice. Great picks! What is a typical day like for you?

Dread: Wake up. Take a shower. Go to class. Leave class. Go to the studio. Go to night Class. After night class, I am right back in the studio till i fall asleep. This is my ritual every day lol

RNR: Hard work pays off...just wait and see! All the imagery I've seen of you and your past projects online are very intersting and vivid to me. Just curious growing up what was your favorite TV shows and/or types of movies?

Dread: I always loved action hero movies when I was young. Just because I thought the idea of someone being able to do what others cant has always been epic to me! I watched alot of cartoons when I was young. I loved shows that made you expand your imagination.

RNR: Yeah, I had a feeling you were into something along those lines! Where do you see yourself in the next two years?

Dread: Comfortable. Free. I just want to be able to do what i want and make what i want when i want to. I just want to be respected for being an artist. I just want my parents and team to not have to worry about anything anymore financially. I feel like i deserve this. I want it all and wont stop untill i get what i feel we deserve.

RNR: Oh, and you will as long as you just keep pushing and never give up! I believe in ya. You truly are a dope artist! Lastly, let the viewers know about your upcoming projects, shows, etc. and how to keep in touch with all your happenings!

Dread: I will be announcing shows and tours in about a month. Im gonna let this tape really marinate with my fans. I plan to drop visuals for every song on the tape throughout the rest of the year. I havent even begun to think about a new project yet. When ever it feels right I will start on a new project! Download Crayons 4-30 available on bandcamp and livemixtapes. I'm that confident that she will because she is very goal-oriented, crazy work ethic and has a great head on her shoulders to name a few. She has all the necessary variables of the equation to achieve abundant success! Already in her career she has made notable strides. She's performed for our President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton AND has sang the national anthem in front of 20,000 people for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Go GIRL! You can find her music all over the web, on all the major sites like iTunes, YouTube, Pandora, Amazon, iLike and coming soon to Spotify, etc. Her major singles right now are "Where ya At" and "Head to Toe", and she also plans to release a mixtape this summer!!! Can't wait! So, let me not hold you up from her music, and check out one of my favorite YouTube videos from Maclyn Lucille where she covers Adele's song "Someone Like You" Simply beautiful and you will also find below more of her music AND make sure you take the time to get to know Maclyn a bit better from our conversation below! Here is Maclyn Lucille...ENJOY!

press Play...

Really Not Radio: Good day Maclyn Lucille tell the viewers, "Where You At" lol All jokes aside Where are you from?

Maclyn Lucille: Hey! I was born in Detroit but I am a proud Clevelander! 216 baby! Haha.

Really Not Radio:  CLEVELAND!!! What's the music scene like there? Are there a lot of venues for up-and-coming artists to perform?

Maclyn Lucille: The music scene in Cleveland, right now, is CRAZY! I mean with MGKs recent signing, by the way congrats and shout out to him, with Cudi and Chip! Eyes are on Cleveland right now, and I plan on being next! Haha! There are A LOT of live venues in Cleveland, you just have to know where to go. Almost every nightclub has a stage, and is willing to book artist under the right circumstances. Plenty of Jazz venues like the famous “Night Town,” and like I said, anywhere with a stage, haha. Cleveland loves music.

Really Not Radio:  Sounds like an artists dream!!! I first learned about you from one of your many YouTube videos. It's been exciting for me to watch you go from singing in your bathroom without effects...then it progressed to songs with reverb to singing in the studio. lol My question is how did you  get to the point you are now? Did the videos help you to get discovered?

Maclyn Lucille: Oh wow, that’s so cool! I always wondered if people would notice that little transition, im finding people ‘like’ the kind of raw aspect of my first videos but the ones in the studio mic get A LOT more views! I started my YouTube when I went to college, it was all about putting SOMETHING out so everyone could hear me sing, if they hadn’t already, also as another marketing tool, and it turned out to be  a little bigger then me and my team thought, haha. The same people who suggested I start the YouTube are who I would say ‘discovered’ me so no, however, people who would have NEVER seen me have heard me now because of Youtube. Different writers and producer, even some who’ve written and produced some of the songs I was covering which is awesome!

Really Not Radio: Okay, I get it makes sense. YouTube furthered your reach, but you were already ON or discovered when you started the YouTubery...cool. You've covered many great artist songs. Who are the most influential to you for wanting to pursue music?

Maclyn Lucille: I would have to say Alicia Keys was the first artist to inspire my pursuit for the industry. I seen an amazing biracial woman with an amazing voice, still being true to her self with the braids and all this and I was like wow! That could be me. Musically I am inspired by SEVERAL artist, several genres, so I could make a list for days! Haha.

Really Not Radio:  ahaha girl I hear ya and YES Alicia Keys is  a fav of mine as well for many of those same reasons. At what age did you realize you wanted to be the star that you are?

Maclyn Lucille: Ha, thanks! I don’t think I'm quite a star yet! But, I realized I wanted to be a star when I was 12 years old, I had been singing for a while with a youth choir called “The Singing Angels” and I just won my first solo, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Judy Garland. I always loved singing, but the first time I sang alone to a crowd and heard and seen people stand and applaud and cheer for me, that’s when I knew, haha sounds a little self absorbed now but that moment changed me, I knew I never wanted to do anything else but feel that from people, that love people will show you when you share your gift!

Really Not Radio:  Now, that would be a video I would want to see! Someone in your family must have recorded your Over the Rainbow performance :-) What is one thing that you've taken from the experience from attending Berklee College of Music?

Maclyn Lucille: One thing that Berklee really taught me was, if you really want this you have to work hard. I MEAN HARD! Berklee was not an easy experience for me, but I grew so much as a musician, not to mention it was the first time being away from home, I was really doing what I always said I would. I did something, in retrospect was probably dumb haha, but I did something great and I really took a chance with Berklee. I didn’t apply to any other colleges out of high school, I was totally committed to going to Berklee, I set a goal and accomplished it. Berklee was a great learning experience if anything.

Really Not Radio: That's awesome Maclyn. I bet Berklee would be tough, but it shaped  you for what to expect with a career in music. I can tell you are very goal-oriented. What are some things you wish to accomplish in the next year?

Maclyn Lucille: Thank for the compliment! Ha! Its funny you ask because like I just said, I set a big, somewhat crazy goal and I reached it! Ever since I was little I’ve made goals and had dreams that a lot of people might be afraid to try to go after, but I feel if I don’t set a goal I won't know where I’m going or what I’m working for! As far as 2012 goes, this year is going to be AMAZING! Im already getting booked for shows this summer and the ball is rolling! I plan on FINALLY releasing my first project! My goal is to drop my mixtape this summer! I can't even begin to explain how excited I am for this! A lot of people have been waiting and I can't wait to share it! Im so stingy with my music, haha, but I want to make sure everything I release is as perfect as possible! 2012 is THEE year.

Really Not Radio:  Yesssss....we can't wait for a mixtape and I know I will have it rotation for weeks LOL What pushes you to achieve your dreams/goals?

Maclyn Lucille: The people around me push me. The idea that this is my destiny pushes me. I never want to let anyone down. To put on my people, for my team, to make everyone else’s life better, my mom's life, my friends,  I want everyone to experience this BIG dream I have! Sometimes it's hard for me to ‘self-motivate,’ unfortunately I’ve always been the type to need a little push, that extra text ‘Hey, get up and go to the gym,’ haha, so knowing there are people counting on me, that want me to succeed and know I can, pushes me to work harder. This is my destiny and it must be fulfilled!

Really Not Radio:  AMEN! I TOTALLY understand. I LOVE IT! So early in your career and you've already achieved major accomplishments. I mean performing for President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is like whoa, and singing the national anthem for the Cleveland Cavaliers game!!! How did you prepare for those events mentally and performance wise?

Maclyn Lucille: Looking back, I honestly cannot tell you how I worked up the gusto, haha. I mean every time I am given an opportunity, a big opportunity like that, it’s almost surreal. For the duration of, rehearsals, preparing or the actual performance it’s like an out of body experience. I can be a pretty insecure person, seeking approval, like most women, but when I am on stage, when I’m performing its [like this is where I] belong. I can’t see myself doing anything else, so confident. I try to go into every performance telling myself , “You betta kill this shit!” haha.

Really Not Radio:  AHAHAHA right murdah dem LOL What's a typical day like in the life of Maclyn Lucille?

Maclyn Lucille: A typical day? When I’m not working, I honestly don’t do much, I try to go to the gym and much as possible, but I like a lot of alone time. That’s why I love working! Recording and being busy and going to events, its like my livelihood, and when I’m not doing that I’m a pretty chill person.

Really Not Radio:  Sounds refreshing and there's nothing like a lil "me" time! Who are some producers you are working with currently, and what music producers would you love to collaborate with in the future?

Maclyn Lucille: Oh man, let me answer the second part of your question first! Honestly, number one on my list is Timbaland! Oh my, if I had that opportunity I’d jump on it! That would be crazy crazy for me! Also, Kanye, if I he produced and collabed with me on a track I would be in musical heaven! Ha! As far as producers I’m working with now, a lot of producers I work with are from Atlanta or Cleveland! From Dez, to Knes, to my wonderful friend Frank T. Stein! He produced ‘Bouncer’ for me and ‘Still Beating’ 2 of my favorite songs I’ve recorded!

Really Not Radio:  If you speak it and write it and work towards you will get those collabs with Tim and Kanye...I believe it. Where does the inspiration come from for you when songwriting? Where do you find yourself writing a majority of the time or does it vary whenever, wherever, whatever? lol

Maclyn Lucille: Like I said before, I like a little push, so when I’m songwriting I like to do it with another person, co-writing. I’m so inspired but other peoples talents and views and energy that in order for me to completely elaborate on my thoughts, ideas, feeling, or emotion for a song I need someone who understands me. I’m not always good at putting my ideas and thoughts into words, creatively that fit the music. If it was up to me entirely every song I record would be an emotional long ballad, haha, and that’s not always right.

Really Not Radio: LOL that's funny aint nothing wrong with the good ballad haaa, but I hear ya. Meeting of the minds are wonderful especially when creating because you never know what will be the outcome. It's exciting. Is it all work and no play for you right now or a nice balance of both? Since I see you just got back from Vegas!!!

Maclyn Lucille: Yes and no. While we did kick it in Vegas, haha, most of my time there was filled with ‘work.’ Lucky for me, I LOVE what I do. I said before when im not working I don’t do much, but working for me is fun! I love my ‘job’ as an artist and entertainer! So I guess you could say it’s the perfect balance of both.

Really Not Radio:  I always say it's all about balance in life. Share with the viewers any last words you want us to know about Maclyn Lucille.

Maclyn Lucille: Where do I start, haha. Well, MacLu is hard to put into a box. Its hard to categorize me as an artist, and I believe that’s what sets me apart. I genuinely love singing, to sing and be heard, if nothing else I will always be passionate when I sing, whether it’s a cover for youtube or a performance in Vegas. My goal is to express my passion and make you feel it every time I open my mouth. Pop song, ballad, or an Itlian Aria, haha. My passion is real.

Really Not Radio: OMGah crazy...I would love to hear you sing an Aria. You would kill it so effortlessly. Whoa...crazy I can really envision it now. ahahaha I'm having a moment don't mind me! Lastly, tell the viewers the best way to keep in touch with you to support you, and let us know about any upcoming events, projects, etc. to look out for.

Maclyn Lucille: Ok, ready?

Video & Interview: Shine On!: Nicatyne of F.H.O.D.

man standing with white t-shirt and warm hat

Nicatyne of Fly High Or Die is a super talented producer whose creativity just manifests from everything he touches. As a music producer, his tracks instantaneously grab your attention with his distinctive sound. I truly appreciate the selection of samples and sounds he selects for his tracks because what he's crafted you wouldn't normally hear on the radio today, which is a major plus in my book. Plus, he fits them together so well it gives you that same feeling of a traditional radio-friendly song, but from a totally different angle. His music just feels good and is fun. Each instrumental takes you on an adventure like if you were walking around a big, rave type party where there are a bunch of different rooms playing different styles of music. Like one room is hip hop, one room is dubstep, one room is world music, one room is 80's pop, one room is electronica dance type and one room is like I'm not sure what this is, but I'm going INNNNNNNN ahahaha. His tracks are so not boring just like you would keep it moving, maneuvering through a party. I just want to keep listening to all his music posted online like his Soundcloud page to hear what's next!!! Now Nicatyne the rapper is equally as interesting. Depending on the song or better yet probably just based off his mood when jumping in the booth...you may get a Mac Dre type flow like on the song One Morning, or a rap sangin', tell it like it is type of flow with Real Talk, a video directed by Erick Lee or songs with a more read in between the lines type of flow like Deaf Star. Also, check out the latest song Full Moon by the Insomniaks, which is featured on the Okay Player site. The Insomniaks is a F.H.O.D duo that Nicatyne is apart of along with Xuice Hades. Check out the F.H.O.D. website to get into more music and explore all the artists! Lastly, get to know Nicatyne a bit more by viewing our conversation below.

Really Not Radio: *In my Nicki Minaj voice* "Nicatyne's his name cuz his slaps are so addictive" Yes, I included all the animation in her delivery as well lol I really don't know if this is the truth, but how did you get your name?

Nicatyne: lol i got the name Nicatyne in 5th grade from my cousin robert hyphy wicks after i recorded my first album ever and my name is nic so it kinda just stuck. Id say it fits

RNR: I would say so...okay, so what part of Sacramento are you from?

Nicatyne: Im originally born in long beach but i grew up in natomas/north sacramento.

RNR: Oh okay, the north area. Soooo, what I like about your production style so much is that you can't really label it and put it in a box yet it has familiar elements, but how do you describe your sound?

Nicatyne: I describe my sound as Nicky lol i pretty just try to make the weirdest cool shit possible. My whole goal is to never sound like anyone else. Ill let everybody else sound like each other

RNR: ahaha very straight-forward and to the point. More reason why I like your style! Now, the individual sounds you use are so distinctive. What's your process of picking or finding your samples?

Nicatyne: The sounds i choose go back to me being me and not wanted to be like anyone else. Don't tell anyone… but i hate going through sound banks so i use stock sounds ALOT

RNR: Really??? Wow...the sounds you use are really good quality. I can tell you are a very creative guy and have a strong passion for what you do just based off your song titles LOL Do you decide your song titles for your tracks before, during or after you create a track?

Nicatyne: I usually make the instrumentals first and about 88.9898989% i just go with the title of the beat. The titles i give usually match what me or the crew writes about.

RNR: LOL very precise! So, what's your story how and when did you get into music?

Nicatyne: Long ass story lol It dates back to embryo days. I came out the yuss with drum sticks. lol i grew up in the C.O.G.I.C. church; it all started with drums at the age of 2 and from there i just expanded. My father is a master pianist so it was inevitable that I picked the keys up, I did that and next thing i know i have a yamaha djx keyboard and I'm making my own bootleg albums on 2 cassette decks and making my action figures fight to my soundtrack.

RNR: ahaha I LOVE IT! You I'm sure you had some killer fights with those action figures! And lmao @ "yuss". Were you a producer first or rapper first? And which one do you enjoy most?

Nicatyne: Ill say I'm a musician first but i guess making beats goes along with that. I picked up rapping a lot later than i did instruments but Ill be damned if they aren't equally fun. I might even say rapping is even more fun since i dropped the pen.

RNR: Yeah, getting on the mic is a whole different feeling. Tell me about Fly High? What's it all about and who are the players involved?

Nicatyne: Fly high is a family. It consists of my brothers, cousins, and sisters Xuice/Illiecism, Joel, Jvthys, Papes, Yarlton Bank$, Tiernan, DAGthy, Tonethy, Roccy aka diamond league big ganja, Bonnie Freetown, our women and children and other hell more family members.

RNR: That's what's up...keep it in the family for sure. What would say about how many hours a week on average are you in the stujo?

Nicatyne: LOL i tried to recall but i lost count at 168 hours. Sorry

RNR: No I totally understand, I know you put in work. How many songs do you think you have in your arsenal? Approximately...

Nicatyne: I have no idea, its a lot though. If you count stuff with my voice on it I don't know and if you count the ones i produced i really can't tell you, and its not even because i don't want to.

RNR: Yeah, it's something like an unsolved mystery ha! What's your favorite track that you produced? I really like Ghasp, Unpossible, Real Talk Deaf Star and One Morning to name several LOL Oh and your rap style delivery is versatile too, which is a plus for me...I like the unpredictability.

Nicatyne:
Im just going to say Time Machine on Nicatyne Addiction or Undress on The Insomniaks Who Sleeps Anymore. I have a million more favorites

RNR: Who and what are some of your musical influences?

Nicatyne: Oh shit. Prince is that nigga fuck what the homophobes say, Stevie wonder, Curtis Mayfield, Parliament Funkadelics, Timbaland, The neptunes, Dr Dre, Madlib, Dj Hi Tek, Enya, Daedelus, Daft Punk for that tron soundtrack, Kanye West, and Fly High or Die is the main one. I can really keep going for lifetimes. Im all over the place though.

RNR: I love the assortment of flavors...it definitely shows in what you create! If and when you aren't creating music what do you like to do?

Nicatyne: I just like to create my mind is constantly creating something so If you're with me and you see me pull out the mac and start tapping you know what's happening.

RNR: Where do you see yourself & Fly High in the next two years?

Nicatyne: Lol two years ago my answer to this question was in LA rich ballin with hoes. Now I'm in LA for school, Im far from rich and i have no hoes. So when i graduate I'm taking my ass back up north to [be] rich balling and with hoes. Ill have a yondo(condo) in LA though.

RNR: I have to ask what's your weapons of mass destruction? What do you use to make your slaparellis?

Nicatyne: I am a die hard propellerhead user. Im on reason all day if i have a choice and logic for the tracking. Im not restricted though ill make a slap on anything. Im that guy that will grab a baby's toy press the button for music to play and slap it to stop the music and that will be the start of a beat.

RNR: Nice! I'm a Reason user too...kewwwwl...What projects have you worked on in the past, and what are you currently working on?

Nicatyne: Im currently working on FHOD PRESENTS THE BEST VOL. 2 thats all i want to speak on lol

RNR: ahaha I can dig it. What is one piece of advice you wish someone would have told you when you first started producing?

Nicatyne: My advice to anyone who wants to do anything is: (drum roll) be yourself(We already have 1 lil wayne/dr dre we don't need another one). Second Be self conscious but not in a bad way and most of all believe in yourself. That applies to anything you want to do. Oh yeah I almost forgot; STUDY the game.

RNR: Yoooo, that's great advice. I hope the viewers grab all that and hold on to it! You are wise beyond your years! Where can the viewers find your music and keep up with all things Nicatyne & Fly High?

Nicatyne: WWW.WEAREFLYHIGH.COM start there and trickle your way through the FH web of insanity.

RNR: Thank you soooo much for allowing me to tap into your mind for a moment! You are appreciated, oh and F.H.O.D!!!!

Nicatyne: THANK YOU MORE!!

Video & Interview: Shine On!: Erick Lee

Video director standing on beach with camera in hand

Boss man or should I say Bosse Media, [Shoot]Life Director/Cinematographer Erick Lee is creating eye-catching videos and getting good looks from every direction. He's passionate about his craft and I notice it in the details of his work that come together seamlessly. There are many people behind the Music, and Erick Lee is a major factor in making the Music shine and come to life! Many times when I hear a song, just the audio, I may not feel it, but when you marry the audio with the visual you hear the song in a whole new way! Erick Lee is up-and-coming, but he already seems to have a strong command on the lens, and has received 2 awards to-date for Best Music Video "Do What You Want (Gone)" by C Plus. This video grabbed the attention of producer Ski Beatz, who has collaborated with Jay-Z, Camp Lo, Fat Joe, Lil Kim, The Cool Kids and Talib Kweli to name a few. Ski Beatz has also established the 24 Hour Karate School, which is affiliated with Dame Dash's DD172 collective. There's so much good music being created, but there's only a few Directors/Cinematographers, like Erick Lee, bringing you the Music as it should be seen! Check out his award winning video and read the conversation below to get to know a bit more about the Bosse behind the lens who captures it all with [Shoot]life!

Really Not Radio: Erick Lee! Thank you for taking the time to share with our viewers. I've done my research and I think it's safe for me to say you truly are, “career motivated, driven by passion” to use your words. You wear many hats Director, Producer and Cinematographer...which hat do you find yourself wearing a majority of the time?

Erick Lee: I simultaneously direct 85-90% of the time but I am also wearing the producer hat when shooting my videos. I also just recently worked as UPM (Unit Production Manager) on a short film directed by a Columbia University (NY) graduate.

RNR: Wow! Congrats on that! Sooo, I’m definitely more of an audio/sound, music gal so I don’t know much about film and visuals other than I KNOW it moves me. What’s the difference between a Director and a Cinematographer?

Erick Lee: A director works directly with the actors and makes the movie come to life. A cinematographer is behind the camera getting the shots, choosing angles, etc. Cinematographers play a huge part in creating the look/feel to your movie.

RNR: Oh, okay I get it. So, what’s your story how and when did you get into film?

Erick Lee: I first started out doing music, which eventually lead to me taping live shows and then it kinda just escalated from there. I wanted to shoot more and more different things.

RNR: It's so weird how are destined paths unfold from pursuing our passions on a daily. So, things escalated to [Shoot]life and Bosse Media...What’s your connection or roles at [Shoot]life and Bosse Media?

Erick Lee: Bosse is a nickname of mine and Bosse Media was the first production name I started using as a run-and-gunner shooter. [Shoot]life is more of a collective and style of shooting, which includes myself, cinematographer Chad Ross, and photographer Bobby Gee

RNR: Real cool stuff...How important is having a strong team around you on set and in business?

Erick Lee: Your team is everything. I've been on sets where people weren't serious and it could really cost the quality of your project. Not to mention time.

RNR: [Shoot]life on the surface seems fairly self-explanatory, but is there a deeper meaning?

Erick Lee: Lol. Not anything other than we live the shoot-life. I am a full time film student, plus a full time freelancer so everyday I'm doing something that has to do whether it's shooting, editing, writing treatments, scouting locations, checking out gear, etc.

RNR: Yep, that's the life or better yet [Shoot]life. What’s the relationship between music and film for you?

Erick Lee: Like I said I started filming through music, so that's kind of how things started off. I am expanding more into movies and documentaries now though

RNR: That is so cool. A couple months back I had the opportunity to meet and listen to Anthony Mandler talk about his start in the industry, and he started with videos, but he always wanted to do movies. So, he made each video like a short film, which we see in a lot of Rihanna's videos. I guess that's the progression of Cinematographers...kind of like when DJ's begin producing. Anywho, What have you been listening to lately?

Erik Lee: Sbtrkt, Sepalcure, C Plus

RNR: Yes, SBTRKT that Wildfire song changed my life for awhile lol. Okay, so I discovered you through the video Everyday Life by Floe Montana. Not even sure how I came across that video other than from my digging explorations, and saw the link to Bosse Media. Now you have a fan for life lol What captured my attention immediately was the coloring, the feel, the movement, the in-out focus and the angles of the shots, the images that gave bold statements etc. totally helps in telling the story. With music production I can pretty much pinpoint who produced the track from their signature. I can almost always tell a Dre, Swizz or Timbaland beat. Is this the same in film? Can directors have a signature or trademark? If so, what’s yours?

Erick Lee: Yes, some directors have styles that some people can notice
like Martin Scorcese, Quentin Tarintino, etc. i'm still in my development stages but I've had a couple people tell me my shot selection shows throughout different projects.

RNR: Nice! I can tell you have a signature coming about. You’ve worked on various types of projects from commercials, music videos, short films and I see you have a debut film in the works, but we will get more into that in a sec. What do you hope to achieve, creatively speaking, with each project?

Erick Lee: Since I am a freelancer I work with different people who hire me to create something for them. Or, in some cases bring their vision to life. This may sound corny but I feel my job is to make people's dreams come true. I really think that way and I love people's reactions when I can please them though doing what i love doing most. It's fuel to my fire

RNR: Yes! I love that not corny at all. This is why you're great, and have a super bright future ahead of you. Where does your inspiration come from?

Erick Lee: Music!

RNR: ahahaha I totally understand! Is every image you see a story waiting to be told?

Erick Lee: I don't really think stories when I see every image, but every once in a while I will come across something powerful and I'll sit there and stare at it for a minute. I'll wonder about what was happening right at that moment when the picture was taken.

RNR: That's that Cinematographer in you :-) In the audio world the quality of gear is significant, but your knowledge in HOW to use the gear will actually get you the desired end result. Is this true for film? Or do you HAVE to use super high-end equipment to get the best quality?

Erick Lee: No, you don't have to use super high end gear, but at the same time there are standards. For example, HD is pretty much standard. There are some viral videos that aren't HD ad they are usually shot that way on purpose. It's an art form so really, there are no rules.

RNR: Exactly, that's the same with music. There are guidelines and suggestions, but really no rules when it comes to art! What’s your weapons of choice in shooting and post-production?

Erick Lee: I use Final Cut Pro and Adobe After Effects sometimes for titles
RNR: Do you have a go-to Editor that you consistently work with because their work is seamless?

Erick Lee: I edit 95% of all my work. Chad Ross does some editing but he lives 6hrs away so it would be very inconvenient to get footage to him everytime I shoot something. Other than that I don't know too many people I could trust to edit my work.

RNR: Yeah, editing can make or break ya for sure. How much time do you designate towards improving your craft or are your projects your practice? lol

Erick Lee: I dedicate most of my time to school and that is definitely practice. Every time I shoot I am working on my craft so it's a steady pretty much everyday thing for me.

RNR: What do you enjoy most about film school?

Erick Lee: The fact that I am learning about something I'm extremely passionate about. I can stay awake no problem, and pay attention with actually wanting to! lol

RNR: LOL! Soooooo, what’s your debut film all about and when will it be released? The people want to know...

Erick Lee: Sorry! I can't say yet, because I want it to be a surprise. I will say it's a documentary though

RNR: Awww, man I was trying to get it out of ya. Can't wait for the debut! You’ve worked with many artists like C Plus, Lee Bannon, Nicatyne, Random Abiladeze, Blee with Turf Hop Movement, sports figures such as Vernon Davis, other film directors and had features on Hip HopDX, OkayPlayer and 2 Dope Boyz. I mean the list goes on and on...So, what’s been the most intrinsically rewarding accomplishment to-date for you?

Erick Lee: C Plus' Do What You Want (Gone) video is my greatest accomplishment as it won 2 awards and also got Ski Beatz' attention enough for him to be working with Plus now.

RNR: Yeah, that's major! I love that Ski Beatz, C Plus Heaven Is record. I’ve also noticed the mad crazy head gear game in a majority of C Plus videos. I’ve jumped online a few times to see what latest styles I need to grab. The work you did on the LookVideo series blows me away. What’s the affiliation with The Official brand? Just to add the Official brand is the hottest caps I’ve seen in awhile!

Erick Lee: Haha thanks! Yes, I direct the videos for Official Brand and they sponsor C Plus. I think maybe the owner liked the music videos we were making and reached out for a collaboration and we've been doing videos every since. By the way Stay Official Part 3 drops real soon!

RNR: That's Official ;-) What do you hope to achieve in the next 2 years?

Erick Lee: In 2 years I will be graduating College with my bachelors in Digital Film and Media Production and plan to move to New York for a job in the industry.

RNR: New York, New York. Wow that's going to be an exciting move! Lastly, let us know 1. what projects do you have in the works, 2. what current projects we should be supporting....ya know whatever last words you want to share with the beautiful people or make sure they know about. Also, share with us all the url’s, handles and the best ways to keep up on all things Erick Lee!

Erick Lee: in the works: My documentary, 2 short films that I worked on are in post production, and I am releasing a series of tour diary documentaries with Detroit artist Black Milk.
The people could support by following me on twitter, vimeo, and/or youtube to stay updated and spreading the word! Thank you!!

RNR: On behalf of Really Not Radio™ we once again thank you for your invaluable time and we wish you much continued success with all your endeavors! Much love...

Video & Interview: Shine On!: Tessa Evans - "She Will" Cover

Sexy woman sitting with legs crossed
Photography credit: www.ominadirect.com

It's only a matter of time before everyone will know the voice of Tessa Evans, and will have her music in heavy rotation whether it be on your music player or on your friends friend's playlist. Her sound is most definitely a breath of fresh air that just feels goooooood. Something like when the Delta Breeze kicks in on a warm, summer Sacramento night...yeah her sound feels that good! Okay, let's get to it...there aren't many artists that can remix or cover an original song without totally messing it up. Now, Tessa Evans on the other hand has remixed some of the hottest songs of this past year, and arguably, we would have to say she made them just as well or better! Just watch the video below to get an idea.  After watching the vid we know you're going to want to know more about Tessa...so get into the conversation below we had with the Songstress. Make sure to keep in touch with Tessa Evans because she will be dropping her mixtape, Champagne & Cocaine this month, oh and you already KNOW you will find it here on Really Not Ready™ as well!

press Play...

Really Not Radio: Tessa doll, I can’t help it, but ever since I called you that it has just stuck, but not to take away from your beautiful name.... Tessa Evans. To quote you from your song, the remix of Wiz and Snoop’s song Young, Wild and Free, you said, “I don’t know you, you don’t know me”. This is soooo true so hopefully after this interview we will know you a lil bit better. Go on ahead and introduce yourself to the viewers and let us know where you’re from.

Tessa Evans: I'm a singer/songwriter from Sacramento, Ca.

RNR: SACRAMENTO!!! WHERE YA AT!!! lol Let me calm allll the way down ahaha Off top, where did you get this unique voice? Do you come from a musical family?

Tessa Evans: My dad probably had the biggest influence on my music. Growing up we listened to everything from jazz, soul, metal, rock, pop, r&b, almost everything under the sun. But...my first love as far as singers go was Billie Holiday. Something about the struggle in her voice was very comforting to me. Someone told me at a show a couple years ago that I sing with a "Wilt" in my voice like Miss Billie do. I swear I went home glowing that night, that meant the world.

Really Not Radio: Wow, I know that was a real special moment for you, and along the same lines...I can’t quite pinpoint what it is that I like most about your sound and style soooo much, but it just feels right to me all the way around. You not only have a one-of-a-kind voice, especially that little extra emphasis you put on the end of your musical phrases like in the video you just released. *PAUSE* SHOUT OUT TO JAE SYNTH (video director), for capturing the essence of the song with the video “She Will”. Sorry about that...I'm back now lol, but what I hear on those end phrases isn’t quite vibrato, but what the heck is that??? What do you call it, or how do you like to describe your sound?

Tessa Evans: That's funny that you should notice that! I call it my cornbread voice lol, and I describe my sound as adult contemporary. That's a pretty broad term, but my sound ranges from soul music, to edgy alternative tracks, to everything in between-except country! I'm no Carrie Underwood lol

RNR: AHAHAH I love it, and cornbread goes with everything kind of like your voice you can dabble in a variety of genres. Now, when I discover that an artist writes their own music, the musical appreciation for that artist grows stronger for me. Your lyrics come from such a sweet, innocent, soft voice, but when you really get into the lyrics...your content is very straight-forward, risque and a tad bit naughty ahahaha You straight up tell it like it is, and you’re telling your story, your truth, which I truly appreciate about you. Where do you draw your inspiration from for the lyrics you write?

Tessa Evans: Thank you, I really love writing! I get inspiration from everything that goes on in my life, from personal experiences to stories I hear, etc. I'm definitely not a writer that has a specific formula for how to write catchy hooks or a great song. Sometimes the songs are about me, sometimes they're not. I guess that's the mystery in the music...

RNR: That's a good point Music always finds a way to represent something to one person and something totally different to someone else. It's very interesting...What following phrase do you identify with most: A. High maintenance, 5 star type. B. Around the way girl C. Ride or die chick D. None of the above E. All of the above?

Tessa Evans: That's hard...probably all of the above. Lol I guess i'm the worst kind because you can't predict which one I'll want to be for the day!! I like variety ; )

RNR: Yea, keep 'em guessing is always a plus! Real quick...Do you always just chill around the house with stilletos and cute little, furry lacy numbers on? ahahaha

Tessa Evans: Always!!!

RNR: LOVE IT!! ahaha I can tell the camera loves you and all that beautiful hair. Do you enjoy being in front of the camera? I can foresee a modeling career in your near future...

Tessa Evans: Wow, what a compliment-thank you! I definitely enjoy being in front of the camera. Looking into the camera is like looking into someones eyes you love & receiving nothing but acceptance back. It feels very intimate to me.

RNR: You really are good with your words...modeling career CHECK...music publishing deals CHECK lol. GET IT! The first time I had the pleasure of hearing you perform was at Marilyn’s for the Home Grown Soul Show. At that time I knew you were going to get on because you have an unforgettable sound. Then, I saw you perform at Harlows and realized your set was produced by Jae Synth, and that sealed the deal for me. When you lace sultry, smooth talent with hard hitting 808s with street-wise content, AND it’s believable AND relatable you are a force to be reckoned with. You have a gift where you can dabble with any genre and knock it out the park for sure, but I really enjoy what you are creating right now. I like to call it “street blues” cuz it’s not just r&b to me where you’re talking about love and yadda yadda yaddda. You are speaking about some real personal experiences, and I want to hear more of the story. At what point did you realize things are really beginning to happen for your career?

Tessa Evans: You're right, I tend to focus on everything that comes from loving someone but not the actual love part!! Although, I have a few songs I'm really excited about coming out and they show the softer side of me as well...I think the changes in my career are largely due to me finding out who I am as an artist & working with the right team of people. My Trak Monstaz fam(Young Dizzy, Cal-E) have been instrumental in my success.

RNR: You said two key things knowing who you are and having a strong team behind you is  guaranteed success. Now, if I understand it correctly you are signed to Block Starz/Dogg Pound Entertainment, but your management is Grand Hustle? If I’m not stating any of this correctly please clear this up for me. How is it being represented by two major factors in the industry?

Tessa Evans: I feel very blessed!! To clear it up, I was signed to Block Starz/Dogg Pound for a single deal on one of my songs. Grand Hustle is my management.

RNR: You already have a nice list of achievements like being named SN&R Sammie 2011 winner for the “R&B/Soul” category....congrats on that btw! You’ve performed at major events like the Natalie Cole afterparty, San Jose Summer Soul Music Festival and the NAACP Rhythm & Blues Festival. You have also opened for artists such as Goapele, Bilal and Chante Moore. What has been your greatest accomplishment to-date?

Tessa Evans: That's a hard question! I'm pretty hands on with my music, so every little step feels exciting to me. Sidebar...I do want to say a big thank you to Josh Fernandez at SN&R for the great article they just did on my music, they've been supportive from the start! Anyway, my big goal was to be signed by 21 & I accomplished that. Right now I'm really excited to continue working with my Grand Hustle Family & eventually tour!

RNR: There are no limits just keep going after it! How much fun are you having with everything? Are you living your dreams?

Tessa Evans: Yes I'm definitely living my dreams. I believe everyone should do exactly what they want & do it to the best of there ability.

RNR: Word! They say 80% of success is just showing up and the other 20% is giving it your all when you are there. I noticed you have a strong presence on the internet from your YouTube videos like “She Will” the Lil Wayne cover and “Too much of a good thing” produced and directed by Jae Synth. Your remixes of “Young, Wild and Free” by Wiz Khalifa and Snoop Dogg, 2 Chainz’s “Spend it”, which is fire too. Even the intro song on www.tessaevans.com is SMACKINEM! I know I’m super excited to hear more music from you, but what can we expect from the Champagne & Cocaine mixtape due out this month and speak on the title of the mixtape a bit.

Tessa Evans: The mixtape has been really fun to record because it's definitely honest to the world as I see it. I think people were surprised that I would jump on a Lil Wayne track and say the things I said, but I sound like me no matter what I sing over! Plus, I love that song in general! I got the title inspiration from a post I was joking about being on "the hollywood diet". I put Coffee, Diet Coke, & ________ = the hollywood diet. Well, people went to town I got so much inspiration! There was champagne, cocaine, cigarettes, cardio(sex), etc. The songs are definitely about that life, so it fit...

RNR: Okay, last question then I’ll let you get out of here. Now I know people sometimes embellish the truth a bit in their songs, but can you really, “hop up on the d*%$ and do a full split”???? ahahaha girl, you don’t have to answer that, but I just had to ask AHAHAHA

Tessa Evans: Lol, I do yoga ; ) Just kidding!!!

RNR: THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for letting us get inside the thoughts of Ms. Tessa Evans and let us know where the viewers can find you and stay connected with you and all things Tessa Evans! Also, if you have any shout outs or put us up on any upcoming events as well....On behalf of Really Not Radio™ THANK YOU Tessa Doll....

Tessa Evans: Thank you, I love my nickname btw! You can follow me on Twitter @tessaevansmusic.
Facebook: www.facebook.com/tessaevansmusic

Shout out to my Trak Monstaz Team Young Dizzy, Cal-E Porter, my grand hustle fam Jason Geter & Mike Lace, & Jae Synth & especially everyone who supports my music!

Audio & Interview: Shine On!: Raw Syl - Goon-Brat Mixtape Vol. 1

woman covering one ear with hand

Really Not Radio™ is beyond ecstatic to be able to showcase talent such as the mighty Raw Syl. We've had the opportunity to spend some time in the studio with Raw Syl, and let me tell you she is an engineer and producer's dream artist to work with. Her work ethic is crazy. She comes in ready to go and will easily knock out a few songs a night (no punching in over here), not only does she produce a majority of her tracks, she masterfully creates engaging stories with her straight up, honest lyrics. After listening to this mixtape multiple times, and I will still be knocking it even after her next music release. I find she clearly articulates a lot of the things we want to say, but don't quite know how to put in words. She not only does this well, but she will use a few different characters featured in her songs to communicate this to you. After you listen to this mixtape you will completely understand what I mean. The Goon-Brat mixtape has a nice variety that will cater to your every mood. A little something to listen to on your headphones to really get into what Raw Syl is sharing with you. A few tracks will get you ready to hit the streets, while other tracks will make you want to spend some time with your lover and tell them how good it isssss....ooookkaaaaaay! Maaaan, I can't even pick a favorite track on this mixtape. I can only pick ranges of songs that are fire depending on my mood. However, I do want to highlight the last track, "Balle con Migo", which totally took me by surprise because a majority of the song is in Spanish and it's soooo fuego! It had me feeling like I was back in the streets of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico on nice sun-shiny day, shades on, posted up between the old buildings and people watching. Good times. Without further ado I present to you Raw Syl....GOOOOON BRRAAAAAAT! Make sure you check out the interview below and press Play...

Really Not Radio: Go on ahead and please introduce yourself to the beautiful people. Tell us a bit about Raw Syl.

Raw Syl: Hello…….Raw Syl's in the building my friends….i'm an artist from Northern Cali…I'm also the daughter of legendary funk artists Cynthia Robinson and Sly Stone of Sly and the Family Stone.

RNR: Sooo, I'm feeling the mixtape like no other, BUT, off top, before we get too deep into thee questions let us know the meaning behind Goonbrat? Any Goonbrats you want to shout out?

Raw Syl: Well….it's a movement…Go0n~Brat was derived from the saying "a Go0n's brat" which is a Go0n's lady. With that being said, we have "Go0n" way's cause we've been "Go0n" raised.  Wus hatning' Lette, Knuckles, Choko, B, TT, Marie, Christy,Tanya, and all the rest of my Go0n~B family.

RNR: I recognize some of the tracks that you selected for this mixtape, which are SMACKINEM btw, but what about the other productions?

Raw Syl: The other productions are just some instrumentals i wanted to sha'dangle with.

RNR: Ahaha I love it okay since you get down with the production...what's your instrument or program of choice to create music?

Raw Syl: Lately i've been just using Garageband and my good ole' trusty Triton.

RNR: Okay, Okay...one day I was messing around with Garageband and was blown away by the great sounding samples that come with it, and you can never go wrong with the Triton. When I listen to your music it reminds me of some Angie Stone for her soulful, passionate vocals, your rap delivery gives me that witty...comical E-40, Mac Dre Bay Area flow. Your topics are very relatable like Frank Ocean and your lyrics are expressive and in your face like Missy Elliot. What are some of the influences past or present that inspire the music that you create?

Raw Syl: LOl….i have to say thank you….you are too kind and i'm highly flattered. But to answer your question, I'd have to say Mia X…..Boss….and my moms and pops of course.

RNR: Mmmhmmm...Mia X always came with it, and your parents I know are total inspiration for you. What's your recording process like from freestyle, writing to recording, and how long did it take you to complete this mixtape?

Raw Syl: It depends….most of the time, I'll be driving somewhere, or doing something like cooking, and a song will just pop up in my head. At that point I'll drop everything to write it down, and or record it on my phone or something to remember the melody until i can get into the lab. As far as how long it took to make Vol.1…it took about 8 or 9 days.

RNR: That blows me awaaaay 8 or 9 days to come up with 11 songs is hard to do...girl you good, you got talent [Coming to America reference] What's your favorite song on Goonbrat mixtape vol. 1? Why?

Raw Syl: I'd have to say #7 "Rock'n wit u"….it's an original track (mine) and it just slaps to me.

RNR: What would be your ideal artist to collaborate with?

Raw Syl: E40, Jeezy, Carl Thomas, Tank,….that's just to name a few.

RNR: What can we expect from Raw Syl over the next year or so?

Raw Syl: More music, videos, and merch.

RNR: Yesssss, I know I can't wait. Tell the listeners where's the best place to get a hold of you for collabs or just keeping up with the day to day activities of Raw Syl?

Raw Syl: Come find me on twitter @RawSyl

RNR: Well, alrighty then I just want to thank you for your time, and sharing with us. Just so you know you always have our support. So, make sure you send us all the exclusives here first :-) To the listeners/readers make sure you follow Raw Syl on twitter to support real, good music. We thank you in advance!
